all the pros in this area insist I calibrate my monitor for edits.I NEVER print. only web or digital for slide shows. do I need to calibrate? thank you!

Most monitors are not calibrated so your image can look different on various displays. You can't change that but if you are editing an image adjusting colour temperature and balance its going to be pot luck as to how it displays for anybody else.

The thing that puts me off about calibrating monitors is the cost of hardware and software to do the job. I have a worse problem because I also print and I use different papers and they are different in their response to the ink I am using.

http://www.hughski.com/ has about the cheapest monitor hardware calibration tool around, that I can find. You can buy it for £60 + postage or even make your own as it is an open design. There is a monitor / printer calibration tool in the works but its going to be about £300.

Maybe I should leave printing to the professionals, although you don't need that many large prints before that cost of calibration gets absorbed.

Even if I don't print myself i may be disappointed when i get prints back which look different to how i prepared them. So i'm considering buying a toll to calibrate my monitor at the least.

You don't have to calibrate but for images you care about you may want to.

Only if you want to see accurate color, if you don't care...then don't.

The first time you calibrate you will be SHOCKED as to how far off your monitor is....I know I was.

I don't calibrate and I do print. I'm happy and so are all the folks that see my prints. Two different printers.

I also print and have not calibrated but I have to apply some "Kentucky windage" to my processing. I really should quit being lazy, buy the necessary software, and do it right. Unfortunately, if I do, I will no longer be able to blame the results on my monitor! :D

I've never seen the need for it, but I don't do much important print printing.

So, i calibrate my monitor and things look great at home. I publish on the web/etc, and everyone else is looking at them via uncalibrated monitors.

So if i am going for print, I can understand the need to calibrate.

But if its going to web only, what is the benefit?
