Good question. Maybe the one's that buy it, thinks it may make them a better shooter or some folks just like having the latest.

Not a clue!

As the old adage goes, "A fool and his money are soon parted."

The body is about $3400 USD and the lens is $1150 USD, the kit goes for about $4000 USD here in the states. What is that in £?

GBP, correct? Converts to about $5050 USD. That's about $1000-$1500 more then the going price here in the States. B&H is currently showing it at $3999. Why is it priced that much where you live? Don't know, but the phrase "You're getting screwed" comes to mind.

The extra price will be the VAT currently set at 20% in the UK

I remember a holiday in Florida and the sales assistant said and now for the dreaded sales tax and it was only 4% :-)

This is a silly Q in my view. The Canon 5D iii sells typically in the UK for £2300 and the Canon 24-105 L lens sells for typically for £800 I think that why it sells for £3000. I don't think that is rocket science to work out.

You are right, the math isn't hard to do. I think though that the OP was either questioning the perceived value of the camera and lens versus the price or was wondering why it is marketed in England for so much more then it is in other places, such as the US. That kind of a price would scare me. I thought the price was bad enough here in the States!

20%! Now that is scary! My neighbor is a Brit. From some town famous for it's concrete cows. (How do you milk those things?) Not far from Silverstone. He has mentioned the VAT that you have, but I never knew it was 20%. No wonder his family likes to visit Manhattan to go shopping when they come over!

It and the comparable Nikon cost big dollars is because professionals need very sturdy cameras and good lenses. They can write off the cost over time as a business expense. Now, if you think you need the same type of equipment and can afford it then the cost is justified in your mind.

This is the same question as why buy a Rolls Royce when a Chevy will do.

Well, what price do you think it should retail for?

There are other factors involved when purchasing like items in other countries and on other continents. You can't just do a currency conversion and expect the prices to be the same. One of the the differentiators might be higher transportation costs, another higher import tariffs, and a third may be the more stringent regulation of retailers in the UK which might results in higher retail prices. There are probably other factors as well.

Of course, but in the end the price is the price and once you factor in the currency exchange rate you end up with a price that I wouldn't want to have to pay, no matter what the reason is for it. It makes it apparent why some Europeans pay for their US vacations by shopping here. Despite what some people will try to tell you, we still don't have it all too bad here.

Could it be there's is an import tax added know as VAT on the product?

Whoops I see someone said the same thing above. I posted without reading all posts.
