Before I knew better, I bought separate filters for each size lens. Now I know that you can buy the largest size you need and use adaptors (step-up/step-down) to use them on smaller lenses. Using a smaller filter on a larger lens is another thing, though.
Before you load up on filters, think about the largest size you might need in the future and get an adaptor for your 58mm.
Your 52mm filters can be adapted to your lens via a step-down ring. Since that lens is an FX lens and your camera is a DX sensor body, you might get away with it, but probably not worth the cost of the ring. You are better off buying filters the proper size, or as Jerry suggested, buy filters only for your largest size lens and then use step-up rings to put those large filters onto your smaller lenses. Saves a ton of money! That what I do also.
I use step up rings. Google them so you can get a very clear idea of how cool they really are. Also try YouTube.
step ups good, but you can not use the hood

I use 77mm filters (my largest lens) and step-up rings from the smaller lenses. A 77mm screw-on lens hood screws onto the 77mm filter, I use a metal one and/or a rubber one. They work terrific and allow you use of a quality lens hood with the use of step-up rings and "one size" filters. True your stock plastic "butterfly" hood won't work with them though.
There is an effective solution to almost every dilema!
Just to check...are you sure you want the 50mm and not the 35mm?
With the D3100 a 35mm is the equivalent of a film or F sensor "nifty fifty". On the D3100 a 50 mm is a 75 mm telephoto.
If you want it for portraits, fine. If you want it for all around shooting, in particular indoors, I recommend the 35. If you have the 18-55 zoom I recommend you experiment with it at the two settings and see which will work better for what you think you'll want to use it for.
I went for the 35mm and have to say it is a wonderful machine. Much sharper than my zoom and makes the camera lighter and nicer to use. I leave it on as the default.
I have to compose more with my feet but that is OK.

MT Shooter has the best answer.
Oh, and I guess I might add that the f1.8 35mm uses a 52mm filter.
I am surprised that the 55mm uses a larger one because my 18-55 also uses the 52mm. But I have duplicated filters with 58mm anyway because that's what my 55-300mm uses.
