I wanted to reafirm to myself which was better; D7100 or D800E in the DX mode.

The following images are 1.0X screen shots of images shot with each camera. Didn't think the original files would load or could be viewed by everyone. If that is not so, I can post them

Both shot with Nikon 85mm f/1.8 lens at 1/1000 and f/5.6. The lighting is bounced from the ceiling with a SB800 flash.

Both cameras mounted on a tripod the same distance from the subject, triggered with wireless remotes.

The files are NEF with no adjustment (straight from the camera) viewed in View NX2.

Original file sizes and ISO:
D7100 file (1) 25.8 MP ISO 500
D800E file 17.5 MP ISO 800

I had both cameras on ISO auto which may give the D7100 a slight advantage, but probably not significant.

That's a good job you've done there.

I shoot D7100 and D600.

To me the second image, which I believe is the D800 image is better in several ways - when you look at the "download",

1. Colour of the mannequin is more natural.
2. Fibres of the cap are sharper and more defined.
3. Eye lashes are better defined.
4. There is less noise in the shadow under the cap as well as in the darker areas near the eyes, in spite of the D800 shooting at a higher ISO.

I love the D7100 and use it a lot, my only qualm with it is the low light performance.

That is a good test you have done. Thank you.

The fiber on the hat in the second image looks very slightly sharper to me-so close it could be my imagination, so the point is lost.
More to the point--I don't use the DX mode when shooting with my 800E.

Definitely! That girl should get to an ophthalmologist.

If someone is only going to shoot the D800 in DX crop mode, I completely agree.

second image clearly has more detail

Agree. Second image has more detail all around and in the eyelashes. Is this a fair comparison? The camera's are different in so many other ways including performance in low light.

IMO - I would set the ISO the same and re-shoot - then i would consider it a fair comparison -

The exposure is significantly different -
The clarity appears to be the same, but would like to see with the same exposure

With the higher pixel count on the 800 and and higher ISO, it gives the 800 an advantage over the 7100...

There are slight differences, but I can't tell enough to know which is which. (Apparently some folk can, but they have a better eye than I do.) That being the case, I will stick with the DX format. I see no benefit to hauling an even heavier camera and lens around for, if any, minimal theoretical improvement. I can already get great 16x20 prints of a highly cropped image with my D7000.

this is a total waste of time : there both identical. . with a tweak here and there . your not going to see a difference in the photos , tell you start to Blow up and crop same photo . any one who never plans to crop and blow over 12x20 shouldent even think about a d800 . if you do your joining the ranks of a wine snob . and you know how smart they are .

Well, you certainly try to tell everyone here how smart you think YOU are! This test does not seem to other responders to be a waste of time. Why you feel the need to alienate yourself from other members is a mystery. You could also stop showing off your illiteracy by learning the differences between your and you're and there and they're. You're a clown of the first order.
