Pinnacle 16 editing program...

Hi I'm new at this and need your help.
My daughter bought Pinnacle 16 editing program and we both are stumped as to how it works. It's the cheapest most basic of their programs.
We are using a Sony camcorder and Pinnacle doesn't seem to want to import the format it uses without first converting it.

The program seems overly complicated, or is it that I"m just too old to catch on?

Hi Fredhog, and welcome to the Hog! Good to see you made the trip. Not being familiar with Pinnacle 16 I will probably not be much help but just wanted to stop by and say Welcome. What format video does your daughter end-up with from her camera? I'm not sure, but I believe there is a Video section on the Hog. I've never searched it out. How about it Fellow-Hoggers... is there and how does Fredhog get there?

I don't use Pinnacle, but use other video software. I do have a couple Sony cameras.

If you provide a little more detail, I might be able to help. What is the camera? How does it record on? How old is it? What is the computer? What format do you have the camera set on. What are the workflow steps? What do you mean by "converting it"?

I bought a copy of pinnacle about 10-12 years ago.
Never could figure out how to do anything with it.

Good luck

Pinnacle will does want to convert any video format to it's own format. It is also a pretty slow running program. I would recommend using short clips to learn with since it will often want to rewrite the hole section of clip when you start working with clips. When you go burn it seems to take forever. But I will add it perhaps produces on of the best quality DVD's. way ahead of some of the others.

Once she gets into it, cutting, putting in some of the graphics and effects she'll love it.

If I'm really in a rush to get out a DVD I use Nero Burn. To me a Nero program is a down and dirty program. Meaning it is fast but quality of the finished product just isn't up to pare.

Pinnacle and Avid are the same company. When she's ready to move up she'll get a good discount on any of there products. I have been using Avid for a while now since I can add in as many tracks on the same time line. Great when using several Video files.

I have upgraded from Pinnacle 11.1 and 14 to 16 and I too find it quite different from earlier versions and not as intuitive. My experience has been that there has always been a problem with Pinnacle in capturing video files from the older tape format (Analog) cameras. I found it a touchy thing where sometimes it would work and other times it just would not connect. With Version 16 the program utilizes digital files and there is no problem in getting the files into the program to edit. Manipulation of the files has changed quite a bit from the earlier versions. Avid has incorporated much of their software into this version thereby changing the way it functions. I found it much more like the Sony editor then the older Pinnacle and it does take a lot more study to absorb the mechanics of it. Keep referring to the on-line help on U-Tube and you will eventually learn the program. I would say that experience with the earlier Pinnacle product is actually a hindrance and slows the learning curve somewhat.

Thanks for the help. My immediate problem is trying to figure out why is won't accept video directly from our Sony H-150 camcorder. Or am I missing something?

Instead of using Pinnacle to import the video, import the video directly to your computer using the usb connection. Your computer should recognize the video camera as a hard drive. Once you've got your video files on your computer, open the edit tab in Pinnacle and locate your video files. Pinnacle will then read them from your computer. Check on Amazon for Pinnacle Studio instruction books by Jeff Naylor. He does an excellent job of explaining how to use Studio.
