I've been doing it for years - no issues with x-ray's - should be no issues with TSA - if you have a pistol grip in your camera bag you might get asked to open the bag and let them inspect - depends on how appears in the picture.
X-rays (especially the CT scanners used for checked luggage) are very hard on film, especially the higher-speed film (ISO 400 and above). But most of us don't have to worry so much about that anymore!
Do it all the time. They have never asked about my camera equipment. Now my insulin pump is another story. I get shaken down every Monday and Thursday. Europe is fun, They, many times, don't even know what it is and are ordering me to take it off.
No problem now with digital. Back in the film days, I often carried high ISO film - Tri-X or even Tmax 3200, so I always put all the film in a plastic bag, and never had a problem asking for it to be hand inspected.

I also take the ball head out, the knobs can be confusing when all the other gear is also shoved in the bag.
