Take a look at the Canon SX50. has everything you are looking for. Goes for about $430 at B&H
$399 at Best Buy, Walmart & Target!
it all depends on if you are
1 a photographer on a tour.
2 or a tourist with a camera.
Look at Fuji cameras. ie the x series E-x2,x199s

I know, no more whining about "downsizing", BUT, after lugging a backpack full of gear through Italy, I came home and bought a Leica C-112. It's a great little pocket camera with a great range of features, but it lacks 3 important features. #1. Zoom; #2. Tilting screen; #3. a really good viewfinder.
Would appreciate any recommendations re. an alternative choice and where I can go to trade my 6 month old Leica for something that meets my needs for a good "bridge".

Rather biased, my suggestion is the Samsung TL500. Only 10 megapixels, and only offering 3x zoom, so delivers exceptional pics with a tilt screen and it's built like a tank. And don't forget about the Schneider-Kreuznach 1.8 lens.
there is no x199s typo. I meant x100s.

Fox, I have heard great things about the Sony RX10, which came down in price to slightly under $1000. Not sure what your budget is and while this is considered a bridge camera, it is not pocket sized. Has a great sensor. I have my eye on one when I can afford it.
I have had a very good experience with Adorama when it came to trading in a camera on a new one. The price they gave me was fair.

Check out the NEW Sony RX-100M3. It's almost a direct swap for your Leica and addresses all the options you require and answers the shortfalls in your present camera.
Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Fuji and Nikon all have excellent Bridge cameras with up to 50X and macro. Each is unique and you should hold each if possible to see how it works for you. Lots of comparisons on line - just Google.
I like to think I'm a photographer. I travel in order to take pictures.

Then resign yourself to lugging your DSLR equipment and paying added luggage fees for the trip. I personally, go on vacation for the change of pace, to enjoy the trip and not be bothered by tremendous worries about loss or damage to equipment. This thread was started as a question about light, small, easy to operate all purpose travel cameras and which would be within a reasonable budget. It's turned into an opinionated argumentative exchange rather then a thread filled with useful advice.
I just returned last evening from France and England. I had two large camera bags and all my equipment. I cannot consider traveling that far and spending that much money "not" to take my equipment. In addition, I have a Sony RX-100 when I need a break, which is not often. I am a small person and I am 71 and I don't find it a burden to carry what I need or want. I am considering adding a 14-24 f/2.8 so I can get into tighter spaces.
