There are a lot of "P" mode snobs around. Your explanation of Program mode usage is great.

Thanks, I believe all the controls and settings are there for a reason and should be used as the situation calls for.

P mode, or (sarcsam) "Professional" mode (/sarcasm) converts any camera, on which that setting appears, to a point and shoot.

Program Mode is not the same thing as Auto Mode! You still have to pick from the multiple aperture/shutter combinations the camera presents to you. To make an appropriate selection, you have to think about which combination will work best with the subject you are photographing and what you are trying to achieve. In essence, Program Mode is not all that different from the priority modes. And if you make smart use of exposure lock when confronted with tricky light situations, Program Mode can be very effective in getting good exposure. Program Mode is only unprofessional for those who do not know how to use it properly.

I always shot in either aperture or Manuel modes. How does program mode differ from the automatic setting?

Who is Manuel Mode?

Hi guys, I saw that my explanation of Program Mode on my Blog was featured as a link to explain how it works. If there are any other questions on this topic I'm happy to try and answer them. I've used Program Mode almost exclusively since the 90's. As I mention in my Blog post, Canon's Program changes back to what the camera suggests once the camera goes to sleep. Nikon stays put where you set it. I've recently found that Sony also acts like Canon and Panasonic acts like Nikon. That being the case I don't suggest Canon and Sony shooters use Program but rather Aperture Priority. Nikon and Panasonic Lumix users have the added benefit of their cameras keeping the setting they choose so feel free to use the amazing Program Mode. It's liberating.
