Distortion correction on D7100

With the kit 18-140mm lens, the Auto distortion control grays out and a message reads, "This option is not available at current settings or in the camera's current state." Seems odd, because 1) the camera is sold with this lens and 2) the function works just fine with my other lenses, including the 16-85, the 70-300, and the 35mm 1.8. Any suggestions as to why it won't work with the 18-140? My firmware seems to be up to date--C: 1.01 and L: 1.009.

Welcome to the UHH. Your other lenses working ok sounds like a problem developed in your 18 - 140mm lens.

Sounds more like a custom lens set-up in your camera.

On the D7100, Auto distortion control under the shooting menu is available only with type G and D lenses, according to the manual. It should be available through the retouch manual if you really need it, although the kit lens may not have enough distorion at its limits to justify having created a profile.

Welcome to our forum!

Shooting in NEF and using Lightroom, you can select the lens and click on distortion control.

I looked on my own D7100 and found the same. A google search reveals others asking the same question with no real answer.

It was mentioned, however, that distortion control slows the camera; better to correct the distortion in post.

Thanks, himichel. Clearly, despite the manual, distortion control doesn't work on this G lens. (Same thing happens on my backup D5100, so it's definitely not the camera.)

Mystery solved. The 18-140 is not supported yet.
