I haven't noticed a lot of mention of Canon cameras. For those who own them, what do you recommend for entry l)evel and enthusiasts (I have high goals..lol) and for those who do not prefer them, can you share with me why? Thanks.

Either you will be good. Cameras are like automobiles! All will tell you their choice for their use and they are good. What ever your choice just shoot a lot, learn and enjoy. Later as you learn and compare to other peoples work you can make a choice that will better suit your needs at that time. Just do not buy bunches of lenses at the start until you are sure that your choice is right !! One thing I learned for myself was a full frame camera as a final choice because lens sizes were the same as my film of past years and I do some scenic and architecture needs that needs finite detail!!

I am new here and just becoming aware of the wealth of info.

If you have the time and investigate all avenues of what you are going to shoot, then maybe you can narrow your choices down. There are a lot of good equipment out there; Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, among others. I have 3 different cameras to cover most of what I shoot. My newest is a Sony a7R, a full frame mirror less, but have so much to learn about this camera but really am intrigued so far as to what it is capable of doing. Biggest downside of it is lens choices. My Canon 7D is old reliable. My Canon SX50HS is used when I need the long zoom and don't feel like carrying the 7D all day. I have been contemplating getting an adapter for A mount lens and purchase a long zoom lens for the Sony. Then may, just maybe I might consider parting with my Canons. Until then they stay part of my line up because I want more info before I make that move and is one of the reasons I am on this site. In the past I have had Nikon and have no problem with it neither. However any time a conversation gets started on Canon / Nikon, It sounds like a bunch sales staff for their brands come out. Some of these people on here are right though ; what feels good in your hands, fits your budget, is correct, you can't go wrong with either and that includes the other top brands too, which surprisingly enough does include others such as Sony and others.. As you get into this you won't want to scrimp on your glass though... I wish you all the very best in your choice.

It pays to do your research. It seems to me that you get
more for your money with Nikon.

Check the specs. (Dont forget "dynamic range" and low light performance as well as speed and pixel count) and cost of Nikons D3100, D5100 and D800
then check the specs of the Canons of the same price...

I bet the Canon users are in for a rude awakening.

Arlene777, it is so good that you ask. Canon owners are so happy they are busy making wonderful pictures and have a special way to greet one another. Happy smiles. Really you could not be happier than owning a Canon except perhaps owning 2 or 3 of them.

No kidding, for entry level stop in a camera shop and get a feel for a camera. I like Canon 60D but that is just me and a few million more but there are some that like an other brand. If you have a friend that has one ask to let you use it. If your in the neighborhood you can borrow mine for a day or two. I have more than one so no problem.

Confidential.
Arlene I don't know or I should talk about it but do you remember Obama phones. Well, it is possible that he will give out cameras just before the next election. Pls keep this quiet it is strictly off the record. This may be of a lot of interest to the photographic community.
Thank you for confidentiality.

ALL of the newer cameras are capable of taking great pictures...pick a system and put the largest portion of your budget on good lenses even if it means buying a used/refurb or last year's model camera. The lenses will last forever, camera bodies come and go. I love my Sony a65 but come next Feb/Mar (tax return) it will probably turn into a Sony a77II...there's always going to be one more on the horizon that's just a little bit better...grass is always greener...LOL!
