The Sony DSC-HX50V

I have been a Nikon person for many years but recently purchased a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX50V and find the directions complicated. I had to go to a Radio-Shack to get some directions and still cannot figure out what buttons to push. Why is that? I will be going on an important trip soon and am concerned that I will be spending more time trying to find what I want on the camera to take the photo----thus missing the moment. HELP.

Yes. I'm a Nikon person and recently bought a Sony (NEX-7). Same issue. They are thinking the same thoughts but talk different talk. It just takes practice.

IMHO the Sony has much better software than my Nikons. But it takes a while to get used to.

Be safe leave the camera on automatic so as not to miss of the moment shots. For others where specific speed or f would be an advantage .. time pressure is not there ... then you can figure out what to do with the many toots whistles and bells.

I had a Pan TZ3, loved it but the world moved on and cameras got better. Decision time came and bought the TZ30 (AS20) in part because I would know what is where and why. Gulp... no free lunch I had to learn what looked the same but was not. Good luck on your trip... set up a list of if/then scenario and practice settings... thus when a real life comes around you can lock and load quickly..

One advantage of sticking with one brand is that you get basically the same Menu system and controls. I had a couple of NEX cameras for a while, and it took some time to get used to the controls.

Don't try to learn everything all at one. Auto can take good pictures. Experiment with one control after another.

Thanks so much. Glad I am not the only one who finds new controls a bit off-setting.

I have the Sony nex 7 and the interface is very clever but
challenging to feel comfortable with. I also have the Metabones
Speedbooster with it so can put any Nikon lens on the 7 and it
becomes full frame with an extra stop.
I must say the camera is one of my best experiences. I love the way it operates and responds. The size, build, photos and
video are top notch. And it feels good in your hand. I am sorry Sony is ending the nex series. The revues on the 6000 are very good. Putting Nikon, Canon lens on this camera have a limit.
A small gem of a camera with a Nikon 24 70 is crazy. But an 85mm or 50mm is really a great rig. I am glad to hear others are going through the learning curve of 3 controls that change assignments etc. I think it is worth the effort.

I recently purchased this camera and really enjoy it but I agree that the documentation that came with the camera is useless. You can download a more extensive manual from the Sony support website. I also purchased extra batteries and an external charger from Amazon. That way the batteries can be charged outside of the camera.

Do a search on youtube for the HX50V...I've found more info on how-to's on youtube than in the instruction manual that came with any of my cameras. Once you get the hang of it, you'll love it.
