I have a Canon G10 and there are later models up to G15 or G16? with slightly different features. This is a great little camera as it has all the main controls on the outside of the camera. You don't have to spend ages scrolling through menus.Operates in manual, takes RAW and has a 70mm zoom.

You may be able to find one of the older models(new)at a cheaper price, my older G10 is just great.

One thing I wont do without is a view finder. Many times you just cannot see the picture through a LCD screen. A lot of these bridge cameras do not have one.

Last year I spent a month traveling - California,Arizona, Colorado and Utah and I lugged my DSLR and tripod all the way. (Only used the tripod once, but that would depend on you of course.)

Really wished I'd taken my Canon G10 instead.

As well as the weight issue, I felt quite conspicuous with the big camera and lens when trying to take candid street photos.

Nikon P7800. Took mine to Maui recently and was very happy with it. It will fit into a pocket on cargo pants and still has a lot of the features of a DSLR. Reasonably fast (f2.0/2.8), decent sized sensor, and can take filters. And the flip/rotating screen is a useful bonus.

I've pretty much given up on taking all my DSLR equipment on vacations when it's not absolutely necessary. These idiots at the airport security check points have you turn on every piece of equipment now to check for explosives (even external drives now) and I even had one fool try to disassemble a huge zoom lens until I yelled at the clumsy idiot. These guys have the intelligence of a flee and are arrogant to boot.

I agree about not taking "all" my equipment. I meant my best camera, a few cards, an extra battery and 2 lenses.

As an engineer, I detest cheap plastic as a means to lighten a camera. Most companies use this method to lighten their camera body instead of using lighter solid metal bodies. That's one reason many elite have stayed with Leica, but this new SONY RX-100M3 seems to be the new Leica replacement as a pocketable walk around/travel camera that takes great photos, has full control and all the features of a DSLR without the weight and bulk. Unfortunately, it does only have a max zoom of 70mm.
And....quality doesn't come cheap either.

Whatever...

To OP, here are the specs for the Canon G-16. http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/compacts/canon_g16/specifications I've used the G16 as an alternative to my DSLR on occasion,...great results. Hope you find a good alternative for you.

Now almost double the pixel count, give great video, make it really pocket sized and make it out of all metal and you have a great camera. Leica hasn't maintained their lead in the camera business all these years for nothing. And now SONY has just put them into second fiddle.
Like I said before, quality doesn't come cheap.

Like I said before,...Whatever...

I haven't posted lately, and find myself reading less and less on the Hog, because may of the posts devolve, like this one has.

Someone asks a good questions, folks post, then someone, like you, starts personally attacking contributors. I offered the OP my opinion, concurring in another poster's opinion...you offer somewhat of an attack...on my concurring post. Why? I didn't trash the Leica or the Sony. I didn't say the Canon was all metal. I didn't say it was the best out there. I said it was a good camera.

So to you, singleviking, I have nothing to say except, "whatever." Enjoy.

To be perfectly clear, I never attacked you nor did I refute your claims. But I do take umbridge when someone refutes facts or gives bad info to any OP. I suspect you're an avid CANON fan and thus followed your inclinations and that's fine. This site is full of opinionated old farts but most shy away from attacking other contributors unless the info provided is misinformation or down right wrong.
I myself, am a NIKON fan for years.

 I agree. Someone asks for suggestions, everyone posts what they have personally found as good, enabling the original poster to research the suggestions and make their own decisions. No need for criticisms of others suggestions.

I agree Denise. Let the OP decide what they can afford or what they feel they need. There's no way to convince people what is absolutes when the subject is based on opinion. That's like trying to convert someone here through argument in the "chit-chat" political section. LOL.
