Well, you all have convinced me that I do, desperately need to replace my kit 18-200 lens (which I've enjoyed since I seem to attract bad weather and hate switching lenses.) But I love big prints!
I've enjoyed reading all of your helpful posts. When I actually start shopping for a lens I get overwhelmed with the choices until I finally give up! Your thoughtful responses might get me to pull the trigger.
Wow hold it. I have that 18-200 lens. I also got the 24-105 F4L. Still like the 18-200 best most of the time but the 24 is better some times.
Don't buy it for the size of the prints. Buy it because it is worth it and perhaps you think about going FF some day.

That is a "W" in vw. like an "L" in Canon.

Let me put it this way. I had the standard 28-135 kit lens on my 7D. A friend of mine kept singing the praises of the "L" lenses. He swears by them and says that's all he will ever use from now on. So, I finally relented and bought the "poor man's" L series - a 70-200mm f4 "L" lens (non-IS). I was blown away by the clarity and "pop" of the pictures I took with the L lens! So much so that I just bought another L lens - the 24-105 "L" IS USM which I managed to snag on sale (new) for $689 (Adorama sells this lens new for $1149, so I felt I got a pretty good deal). I can't wait to try it! I have put my 28-135 kit lens up for sale as I plan to use the 24-105 "L" as my every day lens. It's only f4, but it's "fixed" f4 where my kit lens was f3.5-5.6 max variable across the zoom.
Let me put it this way. I had the standard 28-135... (

Mind if I ask where you got your 24-105 on sale for $689?

What is the differences between "L" lenses and the non - "L" lenses. Huge difference in price. Can you really see the difference or see it only on highly expensive laboratory optical glass analyzers. Could Canon or Nikon, or others ever make a bad lens or sell lesser hand glass.
Judge for yourself. Here's some unedited shots from an old 20D and 300mm f2.8:

I get your drift jeep_daddy.....but why would any self respecting professional photographer use Canon equipment...for God sake !?? 8-)
TC: Because all self respected professional photographer do use CANON cameras; you have been living under a false belief that Nikon is a pro camera which it is and it its only a small 'n' camera. Ha Ha just a jib.

"L" means one thing, and one thing only on a lens. It means that there is at least ONE element in that lens that is fluorite glass. That's the jist of it.
Oh, and it means you get a red stripe on the lens.
WOW, that's GREAT!!!
At least that's two more things than you get with the competition!!
I will say, that with the competition, you also get security.
Since you are pretty much invisible out there, nobody will ever take your gear!!

One of the last but probably most expensive parts of professional grade lenses is that they usually have fixed instead of variable apertures which means more engineering costs, higher precision barrels that house larger apertures. A professional lens is designed for the rigors of every day use such as a professional photographer might have use for.
These fixed aperture lenses have larger apertures that give the photographer one or more stops of light advantage over the consumer grade of lens making it possible to shoot in low light conditions easier than using lenses that cost less. That is why "fast" lenses cost more.
You may be in error on this point
There are several "L" series lenses where t5his is not applicable. The EF 70-300 f/4-5.6, The EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6, and the EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6 are all variable apertures.
In addition, L lenses offer weather sealing that, with the addition of a screw-on filter, will allow the lens to be considered weather-proof.

I believe SS will add that at least one piece of glass in the lens will be Flourite (sp).

Onyx, I want to be wise like you, but I'm impatient and don't want to wait!
I have a plan, but lack the wisdom to know if it will work, so I'm seeking wise advice, from someone like yourself?!
My plan: if I preheat my oven to about 500 degrees F. then stick my head into it and bake it for about 1 hour. That would bake my brain beyond its youthful state and make it more like yours. Would that then give me a wisdom beyond my years??!!
Masta, please do not disappoint me. Please give it to me straight, as I'm dumb enough to accept the truth!!

SS you can't argue with a foolish person they always think they are right. But bless you for trying!

Richard, thanks for the empathy and support.
I know I will never be either as smart or as wise as most here on the Hog.
But I'm willing to go to extremes to be so.
I will even burn my Mensa card, if it will help!!
