Good advice. Unless your Pentax is full frame I suggest you'll find 35mm better when you do that. It is the equivalent to a 55mm on a full frame camera. It's the "what you see is what you get" lens.
[quote=PhotoMan1929 I would much rather carry a wide aperture lens, such as a 50mm f/1.8 to take care of interiors and night shots.

I think I would dial in 50mm on you present 18-135 lens, walk around and see what photos would look like if you shot them at 50mm. If the composition is pleasing and you like it then get a good 50mm 1.8 and take it with you.
I am so conflicted. I have a trip to Italy - like a lifetime trip - in 2 months. I bought a Pentax K-5 with an 18-135mm lens as an all around. Will be in Venice, Bologna, Siena, Lucca, and Rome - is that lens sufficient or should I get a super wide ? I will have to hide the purchase from my husbandino because he's already having heart palpatations from how much I spent on the camera. He says - don't bring it- ... just buy post cards - so that's where he's at. I really think a 10-20 or 12-24mm would be so great and I so get that life is short - so should I sneak one into my kit (I've got plans for that process) or is the one lens I have good and avoid the expense and hassle of lens changing ???? HELP I go back and forth. Opinions everyone (I know there should be plenty).

you husband was upset about the money you spent on the camera and lens to buy a second lens on the sneak is a sure way
to have a fight and spoil the trip and will not help your relationship
with yor husband. but i was married 37 years and knowing the
way you women think you will do what you want not what is smart
ps if you go on a cruise and he finds out that you spent more money on a lens behind his back STAY FAR AWAY FROM THE RAIL

I have a K5 and the 18-135. It's prolly good, BUT if you could get the Pentax 15mm Limited or the 21mm Limited you would be in heaven.....And they're both so small he'd never notice......

If you want travel pictures a fish eye is not the lens. Save your husband a heart attack and use what you got. I traveled in Italy and you'll find that most interior places where you would use a super WA.like the Vatican don't allow photographing. Just my opinion, BTW. I am not related to your husband,LOL.

I've travelled the world with an 18-200 & only rarely wished I had my wide lens. On the type of tour your doing it would be easier to miss a few shots than to keep changing lenses & probably miss more while you are doing that. If anything, I would suggest an 18-200 to get those detail shots of buildings, people, flowers, etc. when you can't reach them otherwise.

What you really want is permission to be dishonest with your spouse. Wow! Don't bother to respond as I am going to mark this thread 'Unwatch.'

I guess some people have no sense of humor - wow - probably votes for Sarah Palin too. I've been married once - for 28 years - I am a cancer warrior - and I get that life is short. My husband is extremely frugal and doesn't get why I want to bring a nice camera "just buy the post cards" so we are on very different pages. My Mother just died and I have some inheritance money coming - but after my trip - so my funding is from that future chunk of change. Why add stress to a guy (my husband) if he knew how much all this equipment cost - when he doesn't need to know. I shouldn't let that comment bother me - but yikes - I was kidding. No I don't need any permission, I really want to know about Italy and type of lens to bring. I hope other married people get the expensive photo hobby and not wanting to rock the boat. In the future I will keep my questions to just the facts.

Pentex has a cam that will give you heart palpatations when you but it?

I understand your situation! I'm also a cancer survivor (changes your outlook doesn't it!), also have inheritance, "my" money, so my frugal husband doesn't complain about what I spend it on.

The 18mm will work out to 27mm on the K5's sensor. I would be sorely tempted to get an ultrawide angle lens. The 10-20mm lens would be very enticing. A wide aperture lens like the 50 f/1.4 would be tempting too. Good luck with your decision. Post some pics when you get back.

Whenever I travel in Europe I carry my Canon 10-22mm and 24-105 mm lenses. I find myself using the wide angle a lot since many cathedrals are in built up areas and you only have the width of the town square to work with it's nice to have that WA lens. Interior shots too will benefit.I don't know what Pentax has available in that range but I'd look into it. The attached shots were taken with the 10-22 and, yes, you have distortion, but you get the shot!

I agree with this. In Europe where they have high ceilings and cathedrals, it's good to have a WA lens. A 10-20 or 10-22 would be great. You can correct some of the distortion if it bothers you, or you can sometimes crop off that outter parts that get distorted. Practice with one before you start so you know what to expect. Sometimes if you are standing next to a railing or another person, that will be in you shot so you must use care when composing your shots.

I've done a bunch of walking around in Europe - with mega camera and without (a bridge camera). I greatly prefer the smaller, lighter package. In fact, my best photos came from a trip where all I carried was an Olympus XA (a little 35, f2, rangefinder).

My point: don't become a pack animal with too much equipment. Enjoy this wonderful experience. Your 18-135 is a reasonably compact lens (although it would still be too much for me) -- I think it's plenty. The idea of a fast 50 is a good one, though. I suspect that you'd put it on and never take it off and start leaving your zoom in the room.

You know that it's really sad that your spouse will not support you in your photographic endeavors.
Here you are taking a once in a life time trip and your husband is being in my oppinion just a little bit selfish. This trip costs XXXX amount of dollars and you want to take home as many memories as possible.
Just think years from now all you will have to remind you are those memories and now digital images.
But I digress! I feel that you have several lens choices. Staying with Pentax Brand lenses a 55-300 f 4.0 - 5.8 ED at $429.95, or a 50 -200 F 4.5 - 5.6 EDWR lens at $249.95 are for starters good choices. I think a short telephoto lens will allow for more shots ,therefore more overall use than than say a 12 - 24 mm lens.
Not that a 12- 24 or a10 -20 mm lens would be a bad choice. it's just a little bit more expensive.
Remember this! You are building a system one lens at a time. Artists have so many different paint brushes. The reason is because each one is designed with a spefic task in mind.
My opinion only! If possible go to a camera store and see what each of these lenses are capable of, by mounting them on your camera and taking a couple of images with each one. (remember to keep a memory card in your camera body.
If you can not do this, I suggest that you grab several travel magazines by going to your local book store or library and determine a shooting itinerary for yourself. Write down all the places that you will be visiting and keep careful notes of which lens you would want to use.
When you are done deciding which lenses you want to use ,add up all your colunms.
Your answer is now right in front of you! It's the one lens with the most check marks beside it!
Keep this in mind an 18 -135 mm lens is a great walk about .
Generally an 18 mm at the wide end should suffice.,however there may be times when you want to get closer but are unable to do so for one reason or another. Now comes the beauty of a longer telephoto lens.
Here is an example. You want to photograph a really beautiful building but right next to it there is lets say a run down slum . What to do? No worries! With a telephoto lens you can zoom in and isolate your subject matter from any clutter. try that with a wide angle? On the other hand wide angle lenses will allow you to take in beautiful shots that are just teaming with robust activity.
Again I think that you already own one with the 18 - 135 zoom lens.
In closing try this after determining what type of shots that you think you will be taking walk around your city or town and try and duplicate those photographs . This will give you another idea of what you need in terms of a second lens!
I certainly hope that this advise will help?
