I work in construction and change locations regularly. Every day I take a point and shoot (Samsung 14 MP) and a Kodak 1080p video camera with me. They are at my side at all times. The Pentax K10 is with me also but stays in the carrier bag. For quick shots I use the point and shoot. If I have time to unpack the K10 I do that. I have to say that you guys gave some of the best and funniest responses to this post. Love this forum!!!

Big Bear! I loved your post! I cut my photographer's teeth on a Canon FTb all those years ago, but still haven't moved up to a DSLR. I am planning to do that in the very near future and have begun checking out my options. I guess I am ready to sacrifice light weight ease of use and go back to lugging a backpack filled with lenses, filters, etc., which I did for so long that the blue backpack became an extension of my body, like an exta limb and is in every picture ever taken of me during those years.

I have been researching cameras and lenses and debating Canon or Nikon. This site seems to have predominately Nikon posts. Switching to a DSLR is going to be like starting all over learning the basics, as I have gotten pretty lazy relying on automatic settings much of the time, unless I am aiming for a special artistic effect. Maybe it will be like riding a bicycle, though, and much of the same principles still apply and will come back to me. My main concern is the switch from a Canon operating system and being familiar with how it works to a Nikon and starting over from scratch. How different is it?

Recently went to an aquarium and left my point and shoot home it is an 8mp with a preset for shooting behind glass it works great in musieums and aquariums. Did have my dslr but was not happy with those pics. I think I will take some pics at an aquarium using the preset on the pns then look at the data so I can create a custom setting on my dslr. Would this work?

Not too sure the repair thing should be a deciding factor. I am am member of NPS, when I have a camera down, I email a replacement camera request. I send my camera off, usually have it back in a week to 10 days tops, and they send me a replacement during this time. This is something Canon does not do.

So why buy an inferior camera:) I wonder what I have started now?
