My great uncle had a 1955 Studebaker, which he was very proud of, and maintained meticulously. The Corps of Engineers used Studebaker Lark V8s in the early 60's. I used one to do a recreation survey from San Francisco to Crescent City, California, and drove the hell out of it. Raymond Loewy designed some exceptionally beautiful cars for Studebaker.

Great photos, wonderful cars. Loved the Gran Turismo Hawk and the Avanti of the mid 60's.

Thanks for sharing.

I have a friend that has a Golden Hawk with the 289 V8 and a Paxton supercharger. The next time I see him, I'll take some new pictures and post them.

Going back in the memory banks, there were three versions of the 289: R1 single four barrel
R2 Paxton supercharger and single four barrel
R3 Paxton supercharger and dual four barrels

Don't remember the horsepower ratings for any of them.

Andy Granitelli owned the Paxton supercharger company when Studebaker motors went bankrupt in the '60s. When the dust settled, he ended up owning STP, a division of Studebaker at the time. He used STP to bankroll his racing hobby, and the rest, as they say, is history. I met Mr Granitelli in the pits at Indy in 1964. He was larger than life, and had an attitude as big as Texas, even bigger than AJ, if that was possible.

Yes he was, but the folks at Indy didn't like his all wheel drive car very much.

Yes, the Novi was innovative and FAST! The turbine cars are the main attraction at the IMS museum this year. You need to go there if you can.

Here's one of Andy's creations, the #40 turbine that Parnelli Jones almost won with.

Yes, this is the car I referred to. I remember the controversy it created. Great seeing it again, thanks for sharing.

The first time I saw a Studabaker was in the lates 40's. At that time we could not tell if they were coming of going. The front and rear looked about the same!

Always called them Studbuckets as a child. Learned to drive in my mothers Lark. Thought I was a speed demon when I got up to 50 mph. Those were the days...
