I took another look at the origional picture and I would be willing to bet my 2 bits that it is mold or mildew in the lens. Take it off, hold it up to a bright light source and look through it while tilting it at a slight angle. If it seems a little cloudy or gray that is it.

Looked for mold and none then I rembered I was using my Spiratone 100 f/4 (no other stops) Portagon that day along with the 135mm and the picture posted was taken with it . It is a single element lens that is supposed to give the soft look of lenses from the 1930's . It does the trick. It was $14.95 new. This was the type of look that Ansel Adams did not like and he and others started the f/64 group to show photos should be sharp. Thanks to all that told about lenses that they like that didn't cost much. That was why I started the post. - Dave

hi Dave,

many, many photographers, both amateur and professional owe a huge debt to the late Fred Spira.
you might want to google him. a very beloved person in the camera industry.

I loved Spiratone. With 6 children I did not have much for Photo stuff and he had it. In film days only fishermen could come close to the differant gadgets that photographers could have. Lots of differant filters. The old pre set lenses extention tubs, strobes, etc etc Always fun to loo at the 2 to 4 pages he had in ads in the photo mags. - Dave

you betcha! he imported so many interesting, and sometimes, funny items that at some point everyone purchased something of his. his loss was really a great blow to the independent importer industry. i don't think we'll see his like again. he was an avid photographer, himself, along with being a major photographic collector. he always said he'd not import anything he wouldn't use himself. a lot of us miss him.

Just about any Nikkor non-AIS manual film lens with an f-mount. Any Mamiya 645 lens used with a Fotodiox Mamiya 645 - Nikon adapter.
These lenses can be used in full manual mode on any Nikon DSLR, but they are great bargains on ebay.

Do any others have a lens that is super cheap and also super? I bought a Spiratone 135mm f/2.8 lens that is a preset (look it up) t mount that can be used on most SLRs and DSLRs. It has been one of my favorite Portrait lenses every since. It has 15 aperture blades so it gives a nice blured background. I would like to know of others that have "went cheap" and found they had a treasure. Picture below is my granddaughter taken with this lens. - Dave

I had my second handed Vivitar 100mm f2.8 MF macro for $100 for 7 years. I use it on my full frame and DX Nikon body for macro shot. it's a great cheap lens. I don't need to buy the expensive Nikon micro lens.
