Now I know the right thing to do, would be to have two bodies. But was thinking about a safety chain that would be held on with a plastic tie wrap. The snap end of the safety chain you would snap onto your camera strap. I know this is over kill and don’t know why being up that high he would have taken off his telephoto lens in the first place.
Just thinking out laud.

A number of answers to your post show no compassion. One of them mentions there being no cure for stupid. My sentiments are with the man who lost an expensive piece of equipment, not those who scorn him for his loss. Yes, some measure of equipment security had been violated to allow such an incident, but that is no reason to heap abuse on the unnamed individual. It does not show that the person should be relegated to using only point and shoot cameras. I'll bet at one time or other, many excellent photographers have lost equipment because of a momentary lapse of concentration, through taking a short-cut on equipment security, or through some totally fortuitous event.

God created Point & Shoot cameras for some people. Simple cameras for simple people. Some people got the idea, if you don't shoot exclusivelly with a DSLR...Your not a photographer or your too simple minded to use a DSLR, such a mind set is rediculious!

Generalizations can lead to a slippery slope. One of the members of the Baytown Photo Club won prizes for his tourist photos before he bought his first SLR. The term "point and shoot" is also misleading. Most so-called P&S cameras, in addition to their various automatic modes, also allow user-set shutter speed, user-set apertures, and full manual. What some of us more supercilious photographers call a p&s is more appropriately called a fixed lens camera.

True, better equipment enhances the ability of the photographer, but some can be very good to great without the best equipment. There may also be reason why people shun an SLR besides the primeval level of their abilities. I had a 3-hour shoot last night. As usual after such affairs, I had a bit of a backache. Here's to photo enthusiasts and professionals regardless the equipment they use.

Again I stand by my answer to this original posted question.!
Come on " saftey chain " on a camera lens . Now that's ridiculous !
You must use a certain amount of caution when changing lenses.
Also you must know where you are in relationship to your surroundings! It is called" Situational Awareness " I learned this from a US Army Drill Inistructor back in 1969.
It is a rule that to this day I live by. In other words ,don't handle your camera equipment or especially attempt to change lenses in any unsafe condition unless your life depends upon it!
If you must change lenses or replace a memory card know where you are and make certain that your equipment as well as yourself will be well protected !
Not to abide by this is tatamount to a disaster !
If you can't do so safely don't do it at all ,Instead use something simpler like a range finder or compact camera with zoom capabilites.
I take no pot shots at anyone. I also certainly do not imply anyones incorrect handling of thier camera gear.

In conclusion :

If just one person reads this and applies what I have stated to everyday use he/ she will become a very careful individual with regards toward thier handling of photographic equipment.
Again I appologize to anyone who took offense at my whimsical answer, however I hope that I have made my point!

If Nikon and Canon made square lenses instead of round ones they wouldn't roll around so easily.
(that's a joke, son)

But they would have to also be lighter than air to keep from falling!

It would be a good use for the element from the Rocky & Bullwinkle show - Upsidaisium. Alas, I date myself.

I am just wondering of all those that put this poor fellow down just how many have crashed an automobile due to a lapse in attention or done some other equally horrendous thing. It is called being human. Show me a man who hasn't made a mistake and I'll show you a man that has never done much of anything.

Hey guys, It was not me (Dietxanadu). It was a fellow I met at my doctors. He dropped the lens.
