I am trying to find out how to set my digital camera so that I can achieve the optimum resolution. I have a LUMIX DMC-FZ70. I just don't see an "easy to understand" option in my manual or in the menu on the camera.

I have read enough to know that excessive cropping will take away from the resolution but even with no cropping at all I don't see that I could actually order a 16x20 print. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!! Thanks so much.

Usually in the Menu there is an option for low-medium or high resolution (pixel count), obviously the lower the resolution the more photo's you get on your card.

Welcome!

Picture size info is on page 143 of your manual. Located on the CD, but also here is a link:

http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/DMCFZ70_ADV.PDF

The 16M or 14M will be more than adequate for a 16x20 print (note that 16x20 is not the exact aspect of 4:3 or 3:2, so leave a little room at edges of your composition for cropping).

And here is one discussion about aspect ratio:

Welcome and usually in the camera menu there'll be a resolution or pixel count setting - low, medium and high. I have a SX40 and XTi with both set on high and I order 18x24 prints all the time with no problem. I never do any cutting as that takes away the pixel count that's needed. So when you take a picture of something you intend to get enlarged, if you have a zoom lens, then focus on what you want.Sometimes you have to get close to the subject to get what you want.

Welcome to uhh. You might try going to http://www.youtube.com and searching for videos on setting up your FZ70. You might have to piece something together by focusing on specific actions but it's probably all there.
