Why Lightroom?

I stepped into Lightroom when i bought my new Canon 70D since my version of PE 11 could not handle the CR2 raw files the new camera put out. While there are a lot of things i still do not understand regarding Lightroom I do like the way it allows me to edit raw data. Even going back to some of my older Fujifilm .RAF files it is slick and easy to use. It also allows me to set up a suite of export selections easily.

I've been lurking in the background(somewhat)reading various posts and one "theme" I keep reading about is Lightroom. I've been using Photoshop since version 3.0. I stopped at PS 7 and currently use PSE 6 (I know, way behind). So, why do I need or why should I change to Lightroom? Just looking for opinions(and maybe stir the pot a little :)) Keep smiling.
I can not see a reason for it, I had the trial version of Lightroom 5 and couldn't find a thing to actually purchase the program (I don't have it today - and missing nothing).

you're missing a ton and if you don't use it and understand it then you really can't criticize it... I have been a professional surf photographer for 35 years and Lightroom is the greatest single leap in photo processing technology since Photoshop... period.

I did not say it is a bad program, I actually liked it, but I did not purchased it, because I could not find anything that I really needed, or didn't have already, I do prefer bridge in photoshop over Lightroom anyday!

Do you shoot in raw? LR is a great front end for PhotoShop.

Yes, I have never shot anything else than raw, only once, taking a couple of shots with my girlfriends camera. That was the only time in my life that I shot jpeg.

This is almost as bad as Nikon vs Canon.

yes it is... it is the perfect front end. I shoot all RAW and often jump in to Pshop for the shadows/highlight filter or some of the old techniques or for using plugins that I like... and of course for text overlays and things that require layers. I only shoot RAW so that I can recover things like blown out highlights and black point adjustments.

ahhh ha... I understand better now... you guys who have mastered Bridge truly don't need LR. I apologize if I was a little sharp in my reply. If someone knows Bridge then they have all the capabilities of LR. The advantage is for someone who doesn't know Bridge as the learning curve for LR is pretty friendly. I am always amazed at how those who are good in Bridge can do such amazing work.

SCsurfershots, could you click on "quote reply" on the post you want to respond to? Makes it easier to know who you are replying to, thanks :). By the way, your surfing shots are superb :)

Thank you for the help, I'm in the middle of processing this event but I knew something seemed goofy! Much appreciated!

I have LR, and I just can't see the hype. I've tried but I always end up bringing something from LR into PS so why not just start in ACR and finish in PS?

ACR, bridge and PS works for me.

BE VERY AWARE that you need to make new catalogs once in a while!!!!! LR can export your tags and settings and all that stuff to a new catalog but I have seen fellow photogs who just went along blissfully to more than 100,000 photos in a catalog but when they went to carve it up in to smaller catalogs they were not able to save the tags and labels and ratings... I'm not sure if Adobe has begun recommending a max size for a catalog but if you are over 25 to 30 thousand you might want to start a new catalog!
BE VERY AWARE that you need to make new catalogs o... (show quote)

Not really I have 280K photos in my catalog and Tim Grey a guru keeps all of his in one catalog. I backup my catalog regularly and have had no problems. I also make sure that all changes are written into the xmp file. The only time I use a different catalog is in my laptop that I use on trips

I guess it depends on your goals. For me 90+% of the time what I'm doing can be accomplished easily and completely in LR. The other 10% I process in LR first and then send to PS.
