I have NationWide and they will replace it with an newer version of what I had. Meaning whatever the technological advances are added to my Nikon D5100's evolution at the time of loss.

It is the replacement value. It's a D800E and it hasn't dropped a penny since a bought it on Amazon for 3200. I also purchased Nikon because I also knew they did not depreciate as fast as others.

You bring up another point. My insurance coverage is based upon the original purchase price not on the depreciated value. So as my equipment depreciates, I should see a decrease in my annual cost. I will have to give them another call.[/quote]

I seriously doubt they will take depreciation into consideration when sending you your bill... and they may even ask if you have any witnesses to your "accident". I've been burned by several of "my" insurance companies. They always look out for themselves first and you "last".

If they do not take into account depreciation as they do with autos then I should be given my cost for the camera. I am going to have to make a call.

Considering the D800E is still current technology and on sale for basically "full" value minus discounts... they should replace it with the same model (new) or the D810 if at a comparable cost. If they want to save money offer to let them actually go out and buy it at the lowest price (new and not grey market) they can find... put up or shut up... but then they'd probably retaliate by dropping you... good luck either way... and remember NationWide... tell them I sent you... <grin>

Bad Luck!!! salt water damage is usually fatal for cameras, especially digital ones. The salt is highly corrosive and gets into the electronics. Better to just start over with a new one as there will likely be residual problems even if its been overhauled.

Yes, salt is corrosive. And even if they get it working, there will still be the possibility of a future failure. I will wait for Nikon to get back with me on what they can do.

Thanks!

I would be interested to find out how your insurance company handles your claim and how they end up figuring "value"... hopefully it won't ever happen but might prepare us for what we might expect or maybe shop around for a better coverage.

I had to provide them with a bill of sale for every item I insured. There will not be a question as to value. The D800E is selling at the price I paid for it. But I am going to ask them to verify replacement. Is it market value or what I paid for it? I am paying a fee based upon what I a paid for it as opposed to market value. My cost does not decline if the value declines. That may be standard practice but it can not be fair. I will let you all know how this turns out. You might all find yourself here one day.

I had to provide them with a bill of sale for ever... (show quote)

Will be interesting to see what they say... Don't confuse replacement cost with what they are selling for new, your camera wasn't new when you dropped it so unless your policy language specifies replacement with a new item, they will likely offer the average cost of what a used one is selling for

Yes, they might want to start camera shopping. Also if there are bugs (mites) in the camera.

LOL

So far everyone except you has been understanding, helpful, or curious as to what's going to happen here... you're the first one who has thought it funny in any way... hopefully when it happens to you, and you aren't covered, no one will laugh at you for not having insurance... or because you had lousy insurance and they screwed you... LOL back at ya. You might want to find a topic with suits you mentality, where smart remarks are welcome... or don't comment at all.

Well lets home you get some good news from Nikon, and if you have to file a claim they won't increase your rates or cancel, if both of those work out for you it will be a great 4th of July weekend

I wanted to get back all of you regarding this incident. Nikon was able to repair by 24-70 f/2.8 for a fee $600. The D800E was not repairable. Salt water had entered critical areas and corrosion was found. AAA covered it. The $600 repair and 100% of what I paid for the D800E. So I ordered the D810 and it's release date is tomorrow 7/17. The failure was a malfunction of the Acratech ballhead clamp.. I sent it is for repair/evaluation and I got an email from the CEO apologizing. They replaced the clamp and sent it back overnight. No charge.

Advice, even though I was insured, AAA had some difficulty in locating my items. Eventually it was resolved/list found. Make sure you and the insurance company have the same list.

Sure am glad that all has worked out for you. I received an e-mail from Nikon yesterday about rebates for purchasers of the D810, would imagine that you got it also. Hopefully, that may also benefit you.

Glad that you got it resolved, though it's too bad Nikon was unable to repair it. But in the end, you're winding up with a better camera. Thanks for the update.
