If you haven't guessed by my avatar, my wife and I own llamas. Recently, she started a llama trekking business here in central upstate NY. My job description now includes the "Official" photographer of the llamas, visiting trekkers, and scenery along the trail. The pay sucks, but the exercise is sorely needed. Here's a few samples. If anyone is interested in a unique photo opp and is ever in the area, stop in. Her website is

Guess that makes Dawn da Llama Mama!
That's an interesting business model. You get people to pay you to be able to take your animals out for exercise. Genius...
But hey, that's some beautiful scenery they get to see. Nice pictures.

Not only do we get paid to let them exercise our animals, we get paid to exercise ourselves too! Also, back at the farm, Dawn has a farm store featuring fiber-art, alpaca/llama socks, mittens and hats, and a gallery of our sons' artwork and my photography. One of the most popular purchases - photo portraits of the individual llama they walked with.

I can pretty much promise you won't get spit on. Llamas do spit as a form of defense or when fighting amongst themselves over food, etc. but ours have a great record when it comes to spitting at people. I've been caught in the crossfire between two arguing llamas, and been spit at when giving shots or the like but happy llamas don't spit and they love getting out in the woods walking. If you really want to walk with a llama, a closer option would be Colorado. There are a number of llama trekkers in that state, including Bill Redwood in Silverton. Check online.
Ok, I know this is a really dumb question and I'll probably get laughed at but why don't you just ride them?
They typically are pack animals , not quite big enough for adult riders, although they can be trained to carry children. They can handle 25-30% of their body weight, but as our largest weighs in at about 380-400 lbs. and I'm about 220, I'd need a serious diet to try and ride one.
I see, I just noticed yesterday that there is two llamas in a pasture just about a mile from me. Didn't look like they needed exercise but I think they do need to have their picture taken. Anyways, thanks for answering my noob questions here, I seem to be the only one with an interest. If I ever go exercise one I'll be thinking about this exchange.
