I have Tethered my my 610 to a MacBook Pro using LR 5.5 it worked some times I needed to or 3 attempts to get the camera recognized. But the transfer rate of the 24mp file is very slow. I used to use my D90 and that was very snappy.
I am looking for a better tethering cable now that may be my issue

Depends on whether they are tethering to shoot with light room or tethering to transfer. Shooting is a whole different ball game.
Agreed. Assumed it was downloading and wasn't familiar with shooting with LR.

Just curious. Why would you want to connect with cable vs just popping SD card out and inserting in the computer. I have a d5100 and d7100 using a Macbook Pro and I've never had the cable out of the box of either camera.
Tethering is valuable to show a model or client what the image looks like. You can help a model see the pose from the camera's viewpoint.
I do not use either LR or a MAC (for these purposes, anyway).....That being said, the obvious solution would be to pull the card from the camera and read it with the computer's card reader. Everything else seems more complicated than necessary.

No, the issue is the difference in file size between the two cameras. Are both the USB port and tethering cable USB3? or USB2? The latter would be slow to transfer large files.

I had the same problem lately tethering my D7000 and DF to my Windows machine. After much searching online, I discovered that the fix was to reset my Lightroom preferences file. Lightroom re-creates the preferences file the next time you start it and the only thing that I had to do was to fix my custom identity plate and the file was still there. Don't Panic! your preferences are easy to fix.
Here is the link to the fix, looks like they have instructions for Mac and PC.

I like to cable directly to the computer when I'm shooting wedding photos with one camera and taking portraits with another which is downloaded directly to the computer so my wife can print them out for the people. Switching cards can be done, but I find it easier to cable directly. (My Windows 8 doesn't work with my Canon Selphy!)
I am trying to tether either wireless or via cable but LR5.5 does not detect my D5300 even though Adobe state it is supported.I can connect wirelessly to my tablet and phone but can't understand why not on my MacBook as it detects the camera under network settings?

What are you using to teather? If you are using the NIKON wifi adapter for the D5300, it WILL NOT connect to your computer. It will only connect to your tablet / phone. NOT to your computer or other network device.
Hey Eric_H I think you have hit the nail on the head! I shall try it now. Thanks very much.

Sorry, can't help you there. I've never used a Mac and know nothing about them.
