I would hold off till the Fall, Maine has some beautiful Fall colors around. :)

Bar Harbor is always beautiful. The ocean crashing against rocks. Blueberry fields for the picking. You might try Baxter State Park if you want mountain scenes. But any place on the coast.

If you are in southern Maine, don't miss Ogunquit! Stroll along the Marginal Way to Perkins Cove. From there you can easily visit York and Kennebunkport. Head down east for great spots all along the coast. One other hogger just posted a shot from Cape Elizabeth. Many more great scenes between there and Campobello Island.

Marginal Way in Ogunquit & Kennebunk Port. How far North are you going? Driving on Route #1 North offers many opportunities. Make sure you enjoy the seafood at a "pick your own lobster size, cook while you wait" on picnic tables type location. Ask the locals for the "go to places". They serve lobster rolls at McDonalds :-D

If you wait to late in the season, I think many of the great seafood picnic type areas (on the water) will be closed. NH & VT offer the best fall colors IMHO.

Here's a link to a recent similar thread. I offered my ideas in this one and I also learned about other interesting places I can include in my trip which starts next weekend. There's no more photogenic place in the country than the Maine coast. Have fun!

Acadia National Park (Bar Harbor), Boothbay Harbor, Camden(sp?). Lots of wild country in the north. Watch for Mouse.

Maine is pretty big - where are you going?
Rocky seacoast is the main feature, but there are many picturesque fishing villages, old farms, lakes and rivers and amazing waterfalls, moose, puffins - etc.
