I'm shooting with a Canon 60D and my printers are a Canon PIXMA Pro Mk II--I purchased it used from a Camera Club member because I wanted a Photo Printer and he had upgraded so it was available at the right price, and a nine year old Epson C88+. I PP with PSE 10. If I'm printing 4 x 6's" to give away I use the Epson; it's good enough. If I'm printing to proof prior to printing 8x10's or larger, I use the Canon with Canon paper or Red River with their printing profiles.

I like the Canon, but it took some getting used to and the Owner's Manual isn't too much help. Like all photographic OEM manuals, it tells you (mostly) how to do something but not why to use the various options.

I think the Canon ink is a bit pricy, but these days so is the ink for the Epson.

If you buy Canon ink at Staples you not only get their kickback but you can use Staples coupons. I have one now for $10 off any purchase of $50 or more. Epson is excluded from those coupons but Canon is not.

I have the Canon Pixma Pro 100, paid $95 with the rebate, also included a box of Canon 13x19 photo paper. I am enjoying it very much. It has worked great and I love the prints I am getting out of it. I do occasionally have issues with the wireless but I just roll it closer to my computer and plug it in.

I read somewhere here that the $300 rebate is a credit to use at B&H? Is that how the rebate works? Not a big deal if you plan on buying more stuff, but could be if not.

A. My main camera is a Canon 6D .

B. Retired and on a budget, have saved about $600 or a little over to get a new printer.

C. In general it seems to be Canon or Epson. Do like to go larger than 8x10 from time to time.

D. Would the Canon's be a better fit with my camera, or no real concern?

E. Opinions and information from those with first hand knowledge of the choices appreciated. Anyone who has or has used both?

F. My printer that died of old age was an HP Photosmart B8550 so that tells you how long it has been since I shopped for a printer.

G. Yes, I know the Canon vs Epson thing is nearly as much a holy war as Canon vs Nikon or Ford vs Chevy. Be nice to each other and just offer advice please. On the other hand humor and kidding is not only OK but can make for a better debate.

If you like big prints, DONT get a Canon. They do NOT have 11x14" in their print menu. You have to use 13x19" paper and trim. I have a Epson Artisan 1430 that I love and you can get a reasonable priced CIS that will save you a bundle on ink.

This would solve at least two big issues with printers for me. I like the idea of CIS and would seriously consider this setup. Look at this video to show what a rip off ink is, and why they give away printers to sell cartridges:

I presently refill my black ink cartridges in my Canon printer. My next printer will very likely be the one you suggested.

OK I shoot with Nikon but the Canon Pixma Pro 100 is a great printer. Large format (13" by 19"), studio quality with 8 carts. It's big and heavy but the prints are very good, especially on the Canon Pro papers.

B&H has a deal for the printer with 50 sheets of 13" by 19" Canon quality photo paper for $400 with a $300 rebate.

The only issue is the wireless can be flakey sometimes.

It's a great deal, but BEWARE it's not that easy to get the refund. I got screwed out of it.
A nice buy for $100.00 but a terrible one for $400.00

I've had no problems with it. My store only carries semi gloss though. I've never checked online.

Good. I'll try it. Semi gloss is good for me.
Thanks.

The directions are precise but we had no problem getting our rebate. And it's an AMEX card you can spend on pretty much anything anywhere - for whoever asked that.

Wadda ya mean, let the other guy shoot first

That's almost as bad as letting the other guy go around the mark first in a sailboat race, unless of course, he has the R.O.W.

I presently use the Canon9000 Pro Mark II . Have no problems with it except that it is a little slow . I am able to print 13x19 on occasion and everything in between . I got the printer relatively on the cheap since it was sitting in the store gathering dust was able to get it half price…caveat…they get you on the inks . Have also a HP 8250 and it is still running strong. Many people send out their work to be done by someone else but I prefer to have total control. Check with a Camera Club for extra advice but here you will get many recommendations . Get the best that you can afford so later you will not regret your decision . Good luck.

I hate to cast a stone here, but I finally dumped an Epson 3800 after months of trying to get it to cooperate with my Mac. An Epson rep at the Photoshop World admitted to some problems. I had the Mac desktop 27'' with the latest OS and all the bells and whistles. After continuing to update drivers eft, etc, etc, with calls to Epson, Adobe, and Cannon, I gave up and went with the Canon Pro-1. No problems since. The Epson people blamed Adobe and vice versa. I also used the Color Munki in efforts. Upgraded to the NEC monitor with a new Mac laptop and am even happier now.

Robert, do check Craig's list. I bought my Canon Pixma pro 9000 ll from CL brand new still in the box.
Like the Pixma pro 100, people were getting them in a rebate package if they bought a camera.
They basically got the printers for free, and would sell them for cheap. I paid $150 for mine. they were normally $499.
I'm sure there are plenty of them out there right now!
Good Luck ;)

The description for the Pro 100 says it includes "setup ink cartridges". Are those the ones that have just enough ink to get you started before you need $124 refill?

I would feel safe betting on that. Probably just enough ink to print the test pages and one or two 8x10's

Oh, I don't bet money, only homemade chocolate chip cookies or chili. You have to live close enough to me to pickup the chili, cookies mail fairly well.

Odd, they probably are, but I'm pretty sure every company does the same.
If so, the starters last a long time.
I wonder if the starters list an ml capacity on them. Someone with a new printer should look and report! ;-)

I do most all of my printing on a small(17"), large format printer.
I would recomend anybody that prints a lot to go that route. Yes the printers are initially expensive at $1500 and up, but the print cost are really low.
Ink is way less than half as is paper. 1000 prints would probably pay for the printer, especially of you sell some. Anyway, just my opinion. There are also good used ones as well. ;-)
