From what I've heard, 8.1 is a substantial improvement over 8.0. I'm using 7.

Stick with 7. Windows 8 (or even 8.1) is a user travesty.

(I use Windows, Linux and Mac. Mac is my choice).

Jerry,
If you're happy with your WIN7 system, then stick with it. There's a whole new learning curve for WIN8.1 (specially for those not having touch screens) since all the menus are changed and drivers are altered. It may be faster, but there's a heck of a lot of hidden files and automation that's not in your WIN7 system.

Techy RULE:

IF IT WORKS, LEAVE IT ALONE.
IF YOU'RE HAPPY AND YOUR PROGRAMS ALL RUN, SMILE AND DON'T CHANGE A THING.

I recently purchased a hp pavillion with windows 8 having a problem with windows loading telling me it's a firewall issue but it's not anyone having the same problem? When I go to share my pictures from adobe elements it's also telling me a problem with the internet connection but that's working on my iPad.

I had purchased a HP laptop with Windows 8. I was impressed with the advertisements and checked it out and bought one. By the end of 3 weeks I was totally disenchanted with it. Sometimes when I would boot it up I could find my pictures and at other times I could not. ON the internet it was a joke. Setup your home page and it would be there for a few times then it would change on its own. Pop ups were hard to control. Long story short, sold it to a friend for less than half of what I paid for it and then bought a real computer......... MAC Pro laptop. I have it now for over 6 months and it has been totally trouble free, runs fast with its SSD drive, very long battery life and best display I have ever seen on a laptop. More expensive, yes, but to me it is well worth it.

Hi Countryman. Sounds like you made the right choice - (for you). My experience has been just the opposite with Windows 8. In fact, I was so impressed with how solid and adaptable it was, I bought it also for another desktop computer of mine. Working excellent on both. I quickly changed each one from the 'Metro' screen to the old 'Windows -start/programs' screen. (Don't care for the Metro look). The 'feel' is just like I'm working with the older versions of Windows but the results are greater speed, faster boot-up, better security, etc. so that makes TWO of us happy; you with your Mac and me with my Windows 8.1. Can't beat that, eh?

When Countryman said he had problems with his internet connection, it immediately told me that his WIN8 had never gotten the critical updates necessary for the WIN8.1 free upgrade and his OS always closed down and then rebooted to exact screen it was shut down in.
I don't like many manufacturer's who load only the basic WIN8 and then give no real instructions to the user on how to customize it or get things running properly. HP loses a lot of points here as do other companies.
There was a recent critical update to WIN8.1 for all those who have completed the upgrade and this update is necessary. Please make sure you have installed this update.

As far as Countryman going to a MAC, that was one solution but an expensive one (someone got a real deal on a laptop). With regard to his display though, there are many laptop PCs that now have the same resolution and some even have bright IPS displays and excellent graphics from NVIDEA GeForce so the old addage that MAC had better displays is something gone by the wayside.

I like windows 8.1. I have no problems finding my way around it to do what ever I have to do. I also like the fact that it is not limited to 16gb of ram. It, like anything new, has a learning curve. I had to go to the internet to figure out how to shut it down the first time but once you figure out where to find everything it does what I want.

At the time I got rid of my Windows8 laptop, 8.1 was not out yet. Yes sooner or later they all catch up to who ever is in the lead at the time. I should also say I do still have a Windows 7 computer but gets used a whole lot less as time goes on. I liked it best to all the Windows versions I've had. My computer at work is a Windows XP Pro and does have it's problems at times, but there the IT group handles those moments when they have a problem.

If you are accustomed to 7 or earlier windows, 8 is baffling until you learn the ins and out. I got far enough to use it reasonable well, but prefer 7.

They have tried to make it more like a smart phone for the non computer users and have alienated much of the existing customer base.

Hope they come to their senses with future releases.

I am sure that Window 8.1 is far superior than the 8, it would have to be. Appears that Microsoft rushed the 8 version to market too soon. They thought Vista was poor but 8 was not any better. Windows 7 was just Vista with all the fixes in place but Microsoft chose to call it something other than Vista XX to distance the bad wrap with it, however the last laptop I had with Vista on it other than its boot up time was better than Windows 8.

joer,
WIN8 and 8.1 can be modified to look almost exactly like WIN7. You can choose which screen you want the OS to boot up into and the menus are almost the same. The only thing I had difficulty accepting was that WIN8 and 8.1 do not allow for a real recovery and repair disk and you have to go to outside suppliers to get one. That sucks, but my solution was to make a clone of my OS boot drive and put it on a USB drive so if all else fails, I can go to my backup and boot via the external USB. But, you have to learn the tricks behind SECURE BOOT and INTEL's ANTI-THEFT SOFTWARE in the new laptop system BIOS.

Users of WINDOWS 8 and 8.1 be aware:
Even warnings on Amazon notify all users of WINDOWS 8 and 8.1 that the early to mid APRIL OS update must be installed by June 10th for further updates to be properly received and installed. This update is like SP-1 was to WINDOWS7. Without this critical update, your system will not install future OS updates properly.
