I have a new toy. I recently purchased a GoPro Black Edition Hero3+. This camera doesn't come standard with a way of seeing what you are shooting. You can purchase a LCD back for the GoPro at an additional cost. I wanted a way to attach the GoPro to my Nikon D300 in order to shoot video and stills at the same time. So, into my closet I went looking for the stroboframe flash extender. I also had a small adjustable ballhead that came with a Joby Gorilla Pod. The setup is very light and adds very little weight to the camera. I have my capture settings on the GoPro to video + still capture every 10 secs. The GoPro will take 1 12 megapixel shot at a very wide angle perspective every 10 secs while it is shooting video. I can shoot video and stills at the same time along with whatever I'm shooting with the Nikon D300! When I was playing around with this setup I had a eureka moment. I remembered that the D300 has a Live View mode. I can use the Live View mode to see what the GoPro is filming.

That's a great idea. The GoPro is a fantastic little camera, and the latest models are easier to control than the original model. I think the company needs better advertising. About 90% of what they show consists of skateboards, surf boards, and activities like that. What they should promote is more normal uses for their products.
Most of the population does not ride skateboards or surf boards. What can the rest of us do with those cameras? I wrote to GoPro, suggesting that they promote other uses for their products, and they replied that it can be used for any type of filming.
So, my question to you is, "What do you film with your GoPro?"

Jerry, I just got the GoPro so I really haven't had time to play with it. Today I will be using it at my grandson's Little league game. As far as the camera mount I would like to be able to film what I am shooting with my D300 and then incorporate that into a slide show using Proshow Producer. Maybe something like 1. Video is showing a great landscape, streetview, event etc and then, cut to a still image of that view, with different fades, crops etc. I have the idea in my head what I want, it just hasn't happened yet.

So you're like me. Buy it first and then figure out what to do with it. I am proud to say that I did resist buying a quadcopter, although it looks like a lot of fun.
I remember a late night comedian talking about the iPad when it first came out. "This is the first time people have lined up around the block the night before to pay $500 for something just so they can find out what it does."
Combining still and video is an excellent idea. My son does a lot with video, and that's one of his techniques. You can also pan a still shot to give the illusion of video. Now they call it "the Ken Burns effect," but it's been around a long time.
Cyberlink's PowerDirector is great for editing video.

I have been using the "Ken Burns" effect with my Proshow Producer projects for several years. Currently I am going to be using Photoshop CS6 video editing and the freeware from GoPro to edit my video's. I need to get a handle on what I'm doing before buying more software. Do you use Power Director now and if so, Pro's and Con's?
As a rule, I skip ads and articles that introduce themselves with individuals riding skateboards or surfboards or airborne bicycles. I have no interest in such. Ditto for Nikon or Apple products. I use my time for showing interest in other subjects.

Oh WOW! Love your setup! I have most of the bits in my gear stash, including the D300 (which I can't seem to part with). :)
The GoPro video camera I have is a hetmet cam, Not sure if it takes stills
but I can always use the D300. It will be helpful to actually see what's being recorded in live view!
Thanks for the inspiration :)

GoPro is going public with a stock sale in the near future. That should be interesting.

I'm still learning myself but I don't think there is a zoom feature when filming. You do have a wideview option and a reqular wide view. Also, I think it's possible to actually zoom in on the frames when editing in post-processing. Stay tuned as I learn more, I will post.

That's one of the many things I like about this forum. Sharing ideas and stirring up the creative juices.
