Hi Nick, I would go the Olympus route, they will also take Panasonic lenses so giving more choice. I have an Olympus EPL-5 with a Sigma 19mm prime lens which is good for street work and landscapes. It is very compact and light and can be kept out of sight when not in use. The OM series is also an excellent choice as well as the Panasonic range, you won't go wrong with any of them.
Cheers,
John.

The 12-40 and 75 are a match made in heaven with it. Have fun with it.

The OMD EM-1 and these two above-mentioned lenses are so good that they make all these other "technical facts and factors", like sensor size, etc. simply go away. Those factors seem completely irrelevant when you see the image quality this combo produces, straight out of the camera! It has been known to change some people's lives. :D

I want to upgrade from my Fugifilm bridge camera. It's been great for my travels and as I still want to keep the weight and size down, I'm looking at a 4/3 kit.

I have 3 on my shortlist. Has anyone used or is using a Fugifilm X-T1, Olympus OM D 1 or the new Lumix GH4?

My primary use is travel and street photography so the GH4 may be an over kill as video is not a main priority. However it does look an awesome bit of kit.

I did look at the Sony A 7 but for me it does not sit well in my hands. My new purchase will be with me for the next few years so I don't want feel any regrets down the road. If anyone is using any of these models or has compared them, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Nick.

The E-M1 may be overkill for your stated use. The E-M10 may be a better fit.

Mainly -
If you have some 4/3rds lenses, then you want the E-M1;
If you want to photograph moving subjects, then you want the E-M1.

Else the E-M10 fits the bill.

Just my opinion.

I looked at Dpreview's review of the X-T1. Dpreview says the X-T1 has the best mirrorless autofocus. Go to Dpreview and compare the EM-1 and the X-E1.

I've used both systems and in my humble opinion the Olympus EM1 wins due to it's better auto focus, EVF, 5 axis stabilisation, and lens line up.

The size is also great.

I find that the Fuji can produce great pics but I can never rely on the auto focus and mostly use manual focus peaking - which the EM1 has also.

The 12-40 pro lens for the em1 is great and the cheaper 12-50 is also very good.

If macro is your thing, the 60mm lens is probably the best macro lens of any system and great for portraits too.

Whatever you get will have video capability, so don't go shopping with that in mind. And don't worry about second-guessing yourself after you get the camera. We all do that.

It seems that size is your main concern, and there are many excellent pocketable cameras available. Consider budget and features. Do you want in-camera panorama, HDR, GPS, Wi-Fi?

Let us know what you decide.

I was getting back to photography after many years of p&s.
After doing similar research, I decided the panasonic GM1. For siZe, low light capability, interchangeable lenses, and price. Now having used it for several months I think it's great. The pix rival daughters Nikon dslr, and I can always have it with me. Just purchased the 14-140 f3.5 lens and might get a 20 or 25 prime Highly recommend! Easy to use though I haven't worked through the 314 p advanced manual yet.

I've used both cameras and am a Fuji fan...but in real work use the Oly is better, as I said, in my opinion.

It's not just me that thinks it but a big camera reviewer here.

http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2014/03/10/the-fuji-x-t1-review-fuji-creates-the-best-x-to-date/

All camera manufacturers claim their auto focus is the fastest. Even though the Oly EM1 is good, it's slow compared to my Nikon V1....and the V3 is faster.

Autofocus was only one of the areas I preferred the EM1. But as Steve says, it's the best Fuji to date. As I said, I'm not knocking Fuji....I like 'em!

I have the Fuji XT-1. Very nice camera. The kit lens is very sharp - extremely good lens. The camera takes some getting used to. Has some quirks, but is extremely versatile. The quality of the photos is undeniable though. Much better than what I was getting with my Nikon d-90.

Thanks

As you can tell from my signature, I'm a little biased towards the em1. It can be stripped down to just the 20mm for a lightweight low profile rig or supped up with the hld7, 12-40 and fl600r for wedding/studio work. IQ from this combo will rival any current camera on the market.

The xt1 is nice too, but I like the lens lineup better for m4/3.

This may not be part of the conversation that Nick1 was looking for but would you please be very definitive and tell us exactly what you mean when you say, "the em1...hld7, 12-40 and fl600r for wedding/studio work. IQ from this combo will rival any current camera on the market." ...and especially be very precise in what you mean when you use the word "rival." Additionally, have you made these comparative value judgments yourself against the full frame sensor produced images or are you citing some other comprehensive study that would lend merit to your contention? Mind you, I'm not disagreeing with you but merely asking how you derived your assessment.

Just so everyone doesn't have to look up what is being said here, let me share with you that a "hld7" is an add-on battery or power grip and the fl600r is a wireless flash, IQ means "image quality," and "supped up" is most likely meant to be "souped up," a slang term from the past 1950s hot rod culture meaning modified for extraordinary performance and not "to sip your soup a little bit at a time" as used within British culture which I share since it sounds as though Nick1 may be a part of based on his use of the language.

Yes and no! The Pana GH4 is the only interchangeable lens mirrorless currently on the market with the capability of shooting 4k video, the latest quality available that dwarfs the quality of 1080p and compares with dedicated videocams that are drastically more expensive. If video is a strong option and the best is required, then it's a Pana GH4, period.
