Make it clear that you are trying to help a friend, don't ask a question and play stupid.

My OP was simply to ask people to relate their playback experiences because some people were having problems. Didn't say I was one of them, and for that matter, what difference does it make? I didn't have to play stupid. I figured someone would show up and do that for me. I was right.

LF, it never ceases to amaze me just how low people's reading comprehension really is! You clearly stated that you sold your camera to Carter and he rented it to someone who had some problems when shooting video with it. All you did was ask people in this thread if they had a similar video issue with their 70D, and if so, was curious about its source and a remedy. No where was there anything underhanded, coy, hidden or offensive. I didn't see there to be any reason for you to get SCOLDED by someone who actually didn't have a better answer for you. LF, sometimes you can't let nincompoops ruin your thread.
It never fails... almost every thread I've read here has at least one poster who's compelled to ruin the banter and break the flow so that they can get their SCOLDING in. :x ;-)

Mad, you then, being a really smart guy, maybe you can explain this to me.
How is it that the fastest lens that Nikon makes is slow, yet they say it's really fast.
Or am I gonna have to ask Marilyn Savant!!

I'm reluctant to say what I think. My response would not be totally serious, but Nikon might sue me.
BTW, I really get a laugh from the Canon vs Nikon people here. My remark was totally just in fun. According to UPS, my 1st Canon (albeit a bridge model) is due to arrive late this afternoon.

The 70D is susposedly the latest and greatest for video, and yet several people have had considerable problems with jerky video and eratic focusing. Who among you have taken Full HD video with the 70D and would you tell us how you did it. What lens, what settings, what technique, etc. This seems to be specific, so please only reply if you have experience with the 70D. Thanks!

Why don't you post this on the Video for DSLR section as well. Not that anyone ever goes there. Probably because no one knows it exists.

Good luck and have fun with your new camera.
I must admit i enjoy going a few rounds in the Canon/Nikon ring every now and then, but it is all in good fun. Canon, Nikon, Brownie Box camera. All the same to me. (Well, the Nikon and the Brownie are anyway!) :D :D

Thanks for the tip! I probably saw the section at some time but forgot all about it.

If you want to do videos. buy a video camera, if you want to shoot photos then buy a canon and shoot photos. that's pretty easy to understand.

Just a note. A LOT of award winning indi films and documentaries are shot using Canon DLSRs. Not video cameras.

True. DSLRs were used extensively in the filming of "Act Of Valor". To say that the conditions were extreme would be a bit of an understatement.

That noise in the video is awful! In the video that you have posted! My 70D does not make that noise! I use either the 18-135 STM or the pancake 40 STM. I mainly use my 70D for stills, but if you read my post from 2-3 days back, I have also complained on choppy video on playback on a laptop. L Fingar I am curious, which Nikon are you using? I almost bought the 600, but then I read about the spots on the Nikons and decided not to. My choice was the 6D, but I went for the 70D as I will be doing a lot of travelling overseas, and might want to do some video. I agree with the others who say, if you want to video then buy a video camera! But why carry 2!

I just recently received my 70D. The first thing I did was to take a few pictures and videos. Videos came out smoothly albeit a little shaky but no staccato. However I do have to attribute that to the lens.

I am using a Tamron 18-270mm (B008E). I knew going into this that it probably would need to be upgraded by Tamron to be compatible with the new camera's. Tamron to their credit is currently giving me a free upgrade and I should receive it back in about 10 days.

You cannot focus during shooting with a non-STM lens on a 70D, T4i, T5i, or EOS M and 6D with Magic Lantern installed (so I hear about the 6D having not tried it.) The 5D2 and 5D3 aren't capable of utilizing the STM lens for follow focus. To focus with one of the first four cameras above and a non-STM lens and getting smooth playback, you have to shut down, refocus, and start recording again, splicing the clips together with an editor in post processing perhaps including a fade transition for a more professional look.

To get a smooth playback of a smoothly recorded video on Quicktime you have to make a menu selection. Under the "View" menu, select "Play all frames." It isn't a matter of a slow computer, a pc, or mac. Most computers cannot handle 1080p at 29.9 fps which is the default recording speed. There are some players that playback smoother than Quicktime but you must make that selection in Quicktime or Quicktime Pro which, incidentally, is a good editor but that fact isn't obvious without some digging.

What video are you referring to? I have never posted one because I have never shot video on a DSLR. As far as which Nikon I use it's the Canon 6D. Nikon doesn't advertise it much. Go figure! :D
