I've recently gone from an XP computer to Windows 8.1 and my old slide/negative scanner will not work with W8. I've tried all I know to find a driver for it with no success. The manufacture of it no longer list it.
Costco has a Wolverine F2D on sale now for $79. Does anyone have experience with it? How about others?
I recently scanned about 10-100 slide reels with a Wolverine F2D . It was easy to use, however the resulting pictures were a bit contrasty. Easy to get into your computer, via plugging the Wolverine F2D directly into your computer via USB or using the SD card directly into the computer. The only problem I encountered is that if the slides were processed in Europe the holders were a bit thick and wouldn't pass through the feeder. Hope this helps
If you don't need to do high numbers of slidesnegatives and want to keep your cost down....any of the Epson Perfection scanners work great.

I would not recommend the Wolverine scanner. Check this link and see if your present scanner is supported:

The Epson 500 & 600 series photo scanners do a nice job on slides and negatives. You can get a refurbished model with full warranty for around $150 direct from Epson.

Exactly what I did. Watch for an Epson sale. I got my refurbished V500 on sale for $99.00. No sales tax and free shipping. It does a great job with every thing I throw at it !!
I did keep my old computer for exactly this type of problem though. It still works fine and I keep it "off line" so who cares if it never updated !!

What is your old scanner (make / model etc.) and what brand do you use for cameras and color printer. That info may help people make recommendations.

As it seems you like your old scanner.
There are 2 things you could do, set up a dual boot system with XP and Windows 8 or download Virtualbox from oracle and create a virtual pc running xp you can pass USB devices to the Virtual Machine.
You could even use norton ghost to make an image of your old XP machine and recreate it as a virtual machine.
The harddrive for a virtual computer is just a big file on your actual computer and you can share folders between the host and guest. As the harddrive for the virtual machine is just a file backing it up is as simple as copy and paste.
Anyway if your happy with your old scanner its a fairly easy option. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions.
Incidentally Virtualbox is available for Windows Mac and Linux. So its a possible option for people who have switched to Macs too, who still have a need for windows.

Jerry, I presume your scanner is rather old. I have gone through the same thing and bought an Epson scanner. The improvement in technology was impressive: faster scans, better results and combined film and paper scanning. By time you find a good work around, you could have been up and running with a new scanner. I do not recommend a low-priced, film only scanner due to the quality and lack of versatility. For not much more money, you can have the best of both worlds.
I bought a Plustec that works well. My older CanoScan 4000 was not compatible with Windows 7 64bit

I've tried scanning slides several times, and I've given up on them. If all you want to do is digitize them, then it's quick and easy. If you want to wind up with lots of good pictures from the old days, the processing will take lots of time.
When I have them scanned professionally, they are cleaned, and the images are color-corrected and enhanced. They look like new images. I had over 1,000 done locally, and I am waiting for two dozen to be returned form ScanCafe, so $0.29 each.
