I am using a MacBook Pro and need software that will allow me to do screen captures - whole screen or partial screens. Any recommendations based on personal experience will be greatly appreciated.

If you are using Mac OS X 10.n.n then you have two free built-in choices:

1. For Whole screen: Press Shift Command-3

2. For One Rectangular Section of screen: Press Shift Command-4. Then use normal cursor controls to select the area os the rectangular section.

Good luck!

Thanks for your recommendation - Snagit does run on a Mac and I am presently using it after purchasing it (after trial) - problem, within 2 months I am informed that they have made 'improvements' to the program - if I chose to download the update I am put back into the 'TRIAL" category and must pay for the program again or it goes dead on me - that is what I consider a scam - so am looking for another option.

Just use the old program and do not worry about the update. But contact TechSmith and ask since you purchased it so soon before could they give you the update for free?

Mr. Stanley Fleming

Thank you for calling me Chief!

It's been a long time , 38 years, since I enjoyed being addressed by that title.

Picasa. I just realized the other day when I had Picasa still open and did a screenshot via the PrtScn key (PC) it saved it automatically.

I just found out that I could sign up for an annual Maintenance Service with Tech Smith and I would get the updates free as well as preferred tech support and other advantages - I like Snagit so much I don't consider the $12.25 annual fee an unreasonable fee and the program is well worth that annual maintenance fee. It took a long time to get to this point tho - not sure why I didn't know that. I am feeling much better about Snagit and TechSmith.

Stan - if you're using a Mac, you can also use Quicktime Player's screen recording function to capture video of what you're doing on-screen. (File->New Screen Recording)

On a Mac - Shift Command +4, will allow you to draw a box instead of a screenshot the 3 takes.
