I have used Aperture since it was first released. It is an excellent program for doing the sort of PP work that you describe. If you find that you want to do more, then there are lots of plug-ins that can add extra capabilities, and you can always use photoshop as an external editor.
Lightroom and Capture One, both offer slightly more features within them, but not I think, ones that you will miss, with the possible exception of perspective correction. DxO ViewPoint 2 is an excellent plug-in that will allow you to correct sloping verticals or other distortions from within Aperture, returning the modified image back into Aperture to maintain your workflow.

Hopefully the new release of Aperture will address issue such as lens correction and offer everything else in the DxO Viewpoint 2 plugin – fingers crossed!
If you are someone who always buys the latest and greatest camera to come out and shoots raw, you may find Lightroom or Capture one better for you as both of these tend to support the latest raw formats earlier than Aperture which has historically been somewhat slow to release updates.

I am a casual, but serious, photographer. I am not into PP much, just want to clean images up and file them properly. I am an Apple guy and now use iPhoto. I am interested if anyone uses Apple Aperture as I have decided to follow that route instead of LR5 mainly for the ease of transition. From what I have read, and experienced with the LR free 30 day demo, it IS a superior program, but more so for the truly serious photographer and PPer! Just looking for some thoughts and opinions.

I use Aperture for most of my pp and love it. It also works well with the Nik plug-ins and I really like the cataloging system. I create new libraries when I am doing different events like trips, etc. It is also easy to transfer images from your iPhoto library.

Aperture would be an excellent step up. It is an excellent program for organizing your photos and very straight forward for processing them (PP). Since you are familiar with "i Photo" the change over should go nicely. Good luck!

Thank you, all, great info - just what I was looking for, even if I am not a 'serious photographer' as Capture48 notes!!!

I am not. familiar with Nik plugins and just checked out their website. The whole suite is available for around $140 which seems like a good deal. I checked the Apple forum and there seemed to be some compatabiliy problems in the past with Apeture. Just wondering if users are satisfied everything is working Ok now.

This might be my next purchase!

I've used Aperture for the past five years. No complaints. My interest in PP is things such as sharpening, burning etc. (I shoot RAW and manual exclusively). No desire to cut people out or combine images. It is not my thing. Aperture was easy to learn. The advice to get a 1 or (even better) 2 Tb external drive is good. I recently got a 2 Tb. Spent about 8 delightful hours while everything on the 1 Tb was copied onto the 2 Tb and then packed the 1 Tb with plenty of space left for two months in France and one month in Chad. Aperture transferred perfectly to the 2 Tb. I've read about plug-ins but at the moment have no interest. I suspect you could up the work significantly with some of them.

Rumor has it that Aperture may not have another version since Apple is coming out with a Photos app. Google is your friend. I have Aperture and use it occasionally. Lightroom is catalog oriented, but has everything but layers. It supports the latest ACR versions, and is not yet subscription only.

Hello tor24tor, I have one more vote for Aperture. Like you, I've used iPhoto for several years and decided to make the upgrade to Aperture about 2 years ago. Not a single regret.

I've been using the suite of Nik plug-ins with Aperture for about 2 years now and initially I had a few minor issue with the HDF program which occasionally caused the processed image to pixelate on the screen. This has been fixed somewhere down the line and I've not had any issues whatsoever over the last 6 months. All 7 plug-ins now work seamlessly with my 17" MacBook Pro and the results are very rewarding.
