I love my 60D except: too big to carry around at all times, focus during videos is difficult, live-view for videos can be distracting in dark places like theaters and hard to see in bright places. I am looking for a camera that is as least as good as the Canon 60D in still image quality but is small enough to carry everywhere, has an EVF, has an articulating LCD, has Wi-Fi, and is better at video. Is the Sony RX100 iii the choice for me? Only downsides I have found are that it is a little pricey and only 3x telephoto.

I was in the same situation as you some months ago, that is I wanted a new camera :-D But I decided to go for a Nikon 1 J2 with 2 lenses the, 10-30 lens and the 30-110 lens. I am sure the Sony is a very good camera, but I did not want to be limited to only 3X zoom.

And I have to say that the Nikon 1 package I bought is far better than I had ever expected it to be. It is very compact, the autofocus is very fast and accurate, the pic quality much better than I expected. The Sony has also the Nikon CX format sensor, the main advantage of the sony in comparison to the Nikon 1 seems to be better low light capabilities. But you should seriously look at the Nikon option and compare prices and specs. Now I carry my Nikon 1 as an extra camera with my Dslr.

When it is time to replace the 60d I will definitely go mirror less and I will definitely consider the cameras you mention or their successors. Right now I am looking for something really small without sacrificing image quality.

Sell the 60D (and lenses) and go with the EM10. IQ, color depth, dynamic range, and low light are all better with the em10. It's half the weight, smaller body, and the lenses for it are all smaller and lighter (by quite a bit) than the canon counterparts.

It has everything that you are looking for. Another option would be the A6000

How challenging were the conditions, especially the light?

High contrast:glaring sun on one side and shade on other. Tests were not exhaustive. Also text on vehicle: sharp either way.

I would make sure that you get the low light performance you want. If it doesn't, then you would need to get a camera with a bigger sensor.

I have the Sony RX100m2 and it's fantastic....I use it loads.

I will be buying the mk3 version and keeping the mk2.

Amazing pics for the size with inbuilt HDR and loads of other features.

It's reputedly the best pocket camera in the world.

The EM10 is good but that doesn't go in a shirt pocket!

Buy - you won't be disappointed. Trust me.

I was in same position. Grand kids and travel. Also can't hold heavy camera any more. Tried the sony rx100 and didn't like it. Now have panasonic gm1 for indoor lowlight pix of kids and I'll get more lenses as needed (desired) And a
Panasonic zs 30 for travel. Sophisticated cameras, a lot of options , small and easy to carry. And great pictures.

Fortunately, it's not available yet because I'm wondering if I "need" one. I came close to buying the II, but I resisted. The RX100 was touted as a game changer, and it's only gotten better since then.

I don't think the reduction in zoom is an issue, since it's only a 30mm reduction, and cropping is always an option. It's 20MP, afterall. It has a viewfinder, more flippable screen, an F/1.8 - 2.8 lens, etc. It is on the pricey side, but you're not going to find one on sale or refurbished for a long time. It will slip right into your pocket.

Thanks, this is a great testimonial. It, and your link below, are very useful. So from the information in this thread and others in uhh, I conclude that rx100iii is the best camera you can easily carry around. If I were replacing my Canon 60D, there would be many other choices with mirror less in general and cameras like Olympus M10 in particular good choices. however, no one has recommended another camera as small as rx100iii yet with great features and IQ.

My only caution is that the Sony RX100 iii have removed their hot shoe in place of the built in EVF viewer. For me this is not a good trade off. I use off the camera flash with the aid of a remote trigger. With the iii model, you don't have this capability. With the previous models, you do have an EVF accessory for an additional cost. If off camera lighting is not important, it's a great camera. I use my ii everywhere I go.

3X is true if you stay in RAW, but when you switch to jpg and use the digital zoom, you have serious zoom capability but you continue to crop down on the sensor from 20 megapixels to 5 megapixels. My RX100M2 zooms out to around 390 MM; however, it's at 5 megapixels at that MM.
