First, imagemeister said use a tilt head instead of a ball head. Second, I specifically said to "not use a ball head with this monopod to shoot vertical shots," because that would put the camera completely next to the monopod, rather than above it. Using a head, either a tilting or ball head, for small angle adjustments is different, and does work well.

Thanks amehta for the clarification. I may have to go look for a tilting head. Any suggestions as to brand & model?

The Manfrotto 234RC Tilt Head is probably the most popular one among UHH people.

I prefer the Arca-Swiss system over the Manfrotto system, so I'm currently trying my ball head, but I am not entirely confident of how well that will work with heavy lenses.

Sorry folks. Can't agree with those of you who say no ball head on a monopod. How do you adjust the angle of your monopod to allow for better support without a ball head. It's 1 leg of a tripod. My 2 legs are the rest. I've never seen a tripod with legs that pointed straight down.

I agree. I use a ball head on my monopod all the time. If you prop it against something, you need to be able to adjust the camera orientation.

A ball head will work - but generally not the best solution - especially where SPEED and accuracy is concerned.

Flip down feet defeat the entire purpose of a monopod in the first place, IMHO.

They are, at best, a poor compromise, but are useful when circumstances necessitate a little extra stability. One should be aware, however, that the joint between the monopod and feet should not be rigid, but should allow for tilting of the monopod. And the feet MUST fold up to prevent an unwieldy tool that catches people's clothes, works of art or small children. 8-) 8-) 8-)

I have used a Miida 3 section for 40 years. It's the best one I have seen. Very sturdy, extends from 20.5" to 60.5", has a ball fitting on the top and a rubber foot. The three legs are deployed from inside the bottom section. By the way, you stand on one of the legs when it is extended, you don't use it as a tripod unless you have it collapsed to the 20.5".

Got one and love it. IMHO, the feet most definitely add lots of stability at almost no cost in weight; in addition, you can use them in places that forbid tripods.
