This reply is much too complicated, I'll simplify it:
If I thought about why I'm doing it while I'm doing it, instead of thinking about what I'm doing while I'm doing it, I'd end up thinking about why I didn't think about what I was doing while I was doing it, instead of thinking about why I was doing it while I was doing it. There. Much better.

My thoughts exactly! :!:

Just seems to be an ART thing, what can I make out of all these parts and pieces, how good am I really, trying to do what I can see before its done, and its a way to spend lots of money if I so choose. Dave

I shoot to capture moments in time, primarily for myself and my family. While in Vietnam in the late 60s my roommate and I both had Wednesday as our "day off". He is the one that got me interested in Nikon gear and becoming a "photographer". (I'm not there yet but still learning after all these years.) We would go out and shoot on Wednesday and the following Wednesday we would go to a dark room on the nearby army base (air conditioned) and develop and print our black and white shots. We also did a lot of slide work using a dark bag to develop. UHH is a great site for me as I attempt to get "back to photography". Many of you don't know it but you have help me a great deal. Thanks to all.

[quote=Shakey]Enjoying photography is a given. But we are all observers of the world around us. The direction of the light falling on the subject can change an image dramatically: scratch light to bring out shape and texture; back lighting to give us perfect rim lighting; over the shoulder lighting to illuminate the entire scene; overcast lighting to prevent harsh shadows. (I'll stop there.)

We photographers view the world differently from other people. We train ourselves to use our eyes and see the magic in changing light conditions, and we see beautiful images in everyday objects. We are blessed with a hobby or profession that enables us to capture that special moment that gives us joy forever.

All very interesting. I kind-a relate to it all and probably more but I think (very dangerous) the one of many thing standing out, for me is, "When I was taught by two wonderful Photog Instructors named Donna and Judith, To See with more than just my eyes. I did not understand at first what that meant! After months in the classroom, darkroom, field trips, museums of the photographic arts like the MOPA, Getty and others, one day we were hanging our work at City Hall and I, during a break, took my camera outside to photograph some interesting architecture and Donna walked up behind me and ask what I was seeing? I replied, buildings and reflections on the glass and the water. She said, look down at my feet, what do you see, a big leaf I said. She told me to look closer and now what do you see? I looked closer and saw color, texture, veins and many
shapes within shapes, sandy background, shadows and the beauty of one
small fragment of discarded creation. She said, now take my pictures of what
I now saw, from every angle of view and from different distances and
settings... I did! That was the first day in my life I understood, felt and knew
what "Seeing" stood for in art and photography. Most importantly, I now see
the planet differently and now more fully. I never knew how much I had been
missing...

The camera and lens help to slow me down enough to view my surroundings and to see and capture what I see through the lens with a now more developed inner eye. That sets me free and that is why I use and shoot the camera!

I find myself wondering sometimes why we make, take, create photos. For family, for income, for memories, for art, for fame, to put on a disk and forget, or to investigate the world around us?
Sometimes I catch myself wondering why or what caught my attention for a shot and then remembering it was the light on the edge of the leaf, but the light has changed by then and the shot is gone. Perhaps better to wonder after the shot.
Anyway, was just curious as what other photographers think.

Why? Simple, because we can!

My reasons, in no particular order, are storytelling, creating, and problem-solving, although some of the problems are ones I've created ;)

It's a profound question and there are many answers for every genre of photography.

I once asked an amateur model why she got into figure modeling. She had the interesting answer: "I want my beauty to be immortalized before age and gravity beats me up."

To hold the image as seen-as shot for future viewing and curiosity.
Being interested in photography since the late 50s and a desire to live the past in pictures it is a joy and a pleasure to live through pictures the past with friends places, buildings, and events. Still an amateur and learning from all of you.

I find that I shoot because it pleases me to do so.

I do not shoot with the thought of making money but would be flattered to sell a photo or two.
I shoot to make memories of places been and of loved ones and I am shooting for the artistic side of photos as well.

But it is just fun to go out with a camera to see what you can do that day that light and maybe have a keeper that you are proud of, that's what keeps me out there.

Photographing is an expression of my artistic nature. I just love creating things. Also I enjoy being out in nature and also bringing it into the house to photograph. I'm attempting to capture what can't be seen with the eye but in the mind and spirit of this wonderful world we are passing thru.

I would recommend a book by Robert Adams, "Why People Photograph" pub. by Aperture

Photography, like most skills, is an art and a science. SO there's the logical part, the science of exposure, sensor size, f-stops, white balance, etc., but also the art of knowing just when to press the shutter, what to frame, what to crop or enhance or color grade in post production. For me, I mostly do it for myself, because mostly I'm the only one who cares how my pics come out. It's the enjoyment of learning and experimenting and spending time with the craft and the art.
And of discussing it on UHH.

We take pictures, snap shots or photos so we can capture the moment we are afraid we will forget.

I have a project of copying old family pictures and keeping a file. Routinely I will file to cd and take to reunions. You will be pleased to know folks continue to send old photos to add to my project. All it takes is a macro lens and a simple light. Viewing the screen on the camera verifies quality ! Photoshop will take care of the needs. Forgot to mention the camera is on a tripod !
