Mine is an AF-S model and has the Silent wave motor and I believe this is what you need if your camera doesn't have a motor.

Ohhh....thank you! It is terribly neglected....I built it in iweb, which is no longer supported by Mac, and honestly I am afraid to mess with it at all.....so all the photography is from my previous life as a film photographer....

Never used Tokina, but have been EXTREMELY happy with newer Tamron lenses. I don't know about the quality of older lenses, but I've never had a bad one.
