What is the difference between a Nikon 10-24mm
AF-S Nikkor f/3.5-4.5G DX ED and a Tamron SP AF 10-24 mm f/3.5-4.5 Di - II LD aspherical (IF) lens for Nikon other than price?
Would I regret buying the Tamron?

I own a Tamron 10-24 mm DX lens for my Nikon D7000; and I do not regret buying it. It's a bit softer on the edges; but that 's a rather common problem with probably all or most of extreme wide-angle lenses.

Since I like adding to confusion, you might also want to consider the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 DX, DxOMark rates it slightly better than either the Nikon or Tamron.

Only you can answer that. Some people will only use Nikon glass, even if they have to buy it used. Others buy aftermarket. The Nikon glass will always have a higher resale value, but costs more also. Sometimes it is a close call on performance, but usually the top Nikon lenses are better made.

You can compare lenses on DXOMark - you'll need to use the drop down box to put in your camera since the ratings are camera specific. I put in the D5300 but you should change it.

Best lens in this range might be the Tokina 11-16 F2.8 You can find them used for <$350 or new for $480.

Hi Gene....yes...the Tokina looks like a great lens, but sadly it won't autofocus on my D40, and I just can't see well enough to manual focus.....
Sorry, I should have explained that my camera is a D40.....

You must be looking at an old review - unless I am mistaken, the current model has an internal motor, and it should work.
