The D7100 is a great camera and will serve you well. Forget the Wu-1a and the 2 64gb cards. Two 32gb cards will serve you extremely well. I wouldn't get the 35mm f/1.8 until you gain more experience with your lens needs. You will need a flash and I recommend the SB-910 because you can use it wireless with your camera in command mode plus it is just a great flash. You can use it to supplement any needs you might have with your 18-300. Get a good tripod and head and stay away from the junk pods and crap heads or you will end up with a collection. Get 1 or 2 extra Nikon batteries (not 3rd party). When you discover what the D7100 will do for you expect G.A.S. to set in because it will. Good luck.

I want to improve the quality of the photos I take. Have been using a FinePix s9000 for a number of years, the last year or so with the command dial broken so I have been shooting mainly from auto settings. I have probably just almost forgotten about shutter speed, f/stop, and such. Mainly shoot grand kids inside normal light no flash and outdoors of sports or just playing. I was thinking about full frame but think I have a huge learning curve ahead. I did shoot film long ago with a Yashica and then a Minolta. I want to see if I'm on the right track and would enjoy hearing some comments on the starter equipment listed below.

All Nikon gear:

d7100 camera body
35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX lens with uv hase filters to protect
18mm to 300mm 3.5/6.3G ED VR lens uv hase filters to protect
WU-1a wireless adapter
2 scandisk 64gb extreme pro cards 90MB/s write 95MB/s read rate(are they fast enough?)

look at amazon for the battery grip, I got one for my d3200 and one for my d800, they were about $36 for the 32 and $80 for the 800, I have used the one on my d3200 for a year now with no problem, they have 2 different inserts, one insert takes 6AA and the other takes 2 stock batteries...

I might add: Forget the UV filter. Just keep your lens hood on at all times. Also, wait on getting a battery grip. I removed mine and just carry the extra batteries in my pocket. If you do feel you need a battery grip get the MB-D15 from Nikon. Some 3rd party grips do work, however, many don't.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. It appears the wireless adapter is a no go.

Unfortunately, that Nikon Wi-Fi unit has gotten mixed reviews. I got a third party adapter that works well, but I forget the name, and I haven't seen it selling recently. I used it with a GPS receiver to add GPS data to pictures.

Otherwise, that sounds like a good kit.

I used 9000 and 9500 for quite a few years. Nice camera.

As for filters, invest in a good circular polarizer, I don't use UV, but If I feel the need to cover the lens (because of blowing sand or saltwater spray, I use a clear glass filter. I got step rings converting all of my lens filter sized to the 77mm that is my largest diameter lens so that all can use the same filter glass. I also got 77mm lens covers so all are the same and I don't have to search for the right lens cover.

I too, have the wireless adapter, it came with the camera and is okay for limited things, But, I almost never use it. I do have it attached to the strap and I am sure that if I take it off and leave it at home, I will find a situation where I wanted it. It ONLY communicates with your Android / I-phone or tablet so its uses are limited. If you want to go wireless get the Mid-level Nikon Wireless adapters. But, you can do well with a Laptop and tethered to your camera using Camera Control Pro or Lightroom. Get a good quality Tripod.

Leave it on the strap! I haven't been able to find mine in months. It's small, black, and hides very well.

Others of us do use UV filters, this is one of the "UHH Top-10 Dogmatic Discussion Topics (TM)". :-D

Just remember not to try to take photos of rainbows with a UV filter on... lol
I have Ultra Clear Glass filters that I use if the weather warrants.. that is windy and dust/sand or water spray. Otherwise I try to keep as little extra glass as I can between the lens and the subject.

Rainbows are uv light refraction.. the filter will filter the rainbow out of the photo.

UV will remove most of the purple violet blue and green from the rainbow

Not to start a filter war but if you use a Clear Glass filter (which protects the front element of the lens without altering the photo) you let the lens do it's job. If you add UV or whatever, it will do exactly as designed and possibly take out things that you wanted. Besides, part of the UV is visible just as Infer/infra red is visible
