Looks like a fishing pier.

It does dominate the skyline. Here is a shot taken much closer just before sunrise, taken from a cruiseship.

I was on level 16 of the Norwegian Breakaway, which I assume is much higher than the Staten Island Ferry :-)

"Breakaway"? That's not the first name that would come to mind if I had to name a cruise ship. it would be like naming a new jet the Boeing Fallapart.

I did notice the higher point of view, I actually usually head to the lower deck on the ferry as I prefer that location

Sandy destroyed the near 1/2 mile long boardwalk @ Laurence Harbor, NJ but I`m happy to report all has been restored and better; there are stone jetties along the shoreline that the fishermen enjoy.

Another view: from NJ over the Raritan Bay, Staten Island, Jersey City behind S.I. ( left ) Brooklyn ( right ) Verranzano and Coney Island and 1WTC @ the southern tip of Manhattan. You should see it at night, all lit up. Outerbridge crossing & Verranzano alight; you can see jets taking off and landing at Newark,LaGuardia & JFK and grandest of all , the WTC in lights dominates the panoramic view. One of my favorite spots.

I haven`t had much luck getting the perfect night shot but when I do, I`ll post it. Winter mos. yield the clearest skies and with summer approaching, you get a lot of haze but I`m making excuses; will keep trying for " the shot ".

That is a nice shot. I took my pic with Fuji 1800 that I keep in glove box. Need to take my Canon 5d mkII and tripod and get to work.
