Asking for some help on purchasing a battery pack for my D7100. I am an amateur and will not use it all the time, but I have a few choices. Nikon is very happy with theirs at about $250.00, but I also see some for about $50 or $60 on Amazon. Will they harm my camera or am I better biting the bullet for the Nikon? Thanks in advance for your help!

In my opinion, you would do just as well with the lower cost one. I have 3 different ones for 3 different cameras. Never a problem with any of them and I saved a lot of money. Sure, some people will say "you get what you pay for". I wish that were always true, but it isn't.

Why a pack when a second battery is around $25.00?
AHHHHHH, I have found that with battery packs and spare batteries that you "DO" get what you pay for! I bought some after market batteries for my D80 and my D5100, and had better luck with a "Nikon" purchased battery. The others just did not last as long and did not recharge and stay recharged like the Nikon batteries. I am ready to buy a spare battery for my D7100 now, as well, and will definitely buy from Nikon!

I bought this Bower grip (in the D7000 version) from B&H over a year ago and have had good service. It includes a spare battery with the grip. The fit is tight and the extra controls have functioned as expected. The camera battery meter will not give a life remaining estimate as it does with the normal battery. It will only give a warning when it believes battery strength is low. The included spare battery did not seem to last as long as the original between charging. But, for about 1/3 the cost of the Nikon, it meets my needs.

You'll be happier with just extra "charged" batteries. I purchased the MB-15D and ended up removing it. It's just as easy or easier to switch out. I have small hands and the camera just felt too large. But if you get one, get the Nikon.

I agree, just carry extra batteries.. the pack seems to always be in the way for other things.

May I ask where you found a battery for a D7100 for $25.00 or are you talking about a generic battery not a Nikon battery?

I agree, I have a Watson battery that was a "second" battery provided by B&H but it only provides about 2/3 the time of a Nikon battery and was supposedly $40 instead of the $54 B&H wants for Nikon. I rarely use it.
I bought the Vello grip for a d7000 and it works exactly the way it was intended. I did buy a Nikon battery for this grip but have used 3rd party batteries in my d3000 with success. Try the "other" brand. Buy it from Adorama or B&H and if it's not what you want, bite the bullet and trade back for the Nikon grip.
