Please answer a serious question. Socialism is a system where you work for the government and the government provides all of your needs, why doesn't that fit the military? Is it because you don't want it to fit the military?

You said your father was a military man in the army. If he was around during the Viet Nam War then he was also around during the cold war. At a time when we were fighting against socialism and his twin brother communism. Did he share his views with you on the cold war as well? Wouldn't that mean that our military was fighting against it's self? So confusing...

you are mistaken about the definition of socialism.
Socialism is a social and economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy, as well as a political theory and movement that aims at the establishment of such a system. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

Definition of 'Socialism'
An economic and political system based on public or collective ownership of the means of production. Socialism emphasizes equality rather than achievement, and values workers by the amount of time they put in rather than by the amount of value they produce. It also makes individuals dependent on the state for everything from food to health care. China, Vietnam and Cuba are examples of modern-day socialist societies. Twentieth-century socialist governments were overthrown in Czechoslovakia, East Germany and the U.S.S.R.

Investopedia explains 'Socialism'
While capitalism is based on a price system, profit and loss and private property rights, socialism is based on bureaucratic central planning and collective ownership. Proponents of socialism believe that it creates equality and provides economic security and that capitalism is an inferior system that exploits workers for the benefit of a small, wealthy class. Critics of socialism believe that it is based on faulty principles and ignores human nature and the role of incentives in economic transactions.

So I would have to say that you are taking the Marxist point of view on Socialism. Let me ask you this, are you against public education? public transportation? libraries? food and assistance and medical care for the needy? These are the aspects of socialism that apply to our country, the USA... not the expired Soviet Union or China 20 years ago.

If I may answer. it has been the stated goal of the Right to not allow any of those things for the public good. They must be only for the rich. Before everybody raises hell-- Ryan's budget has always said no more for you, all for the rich. If we give it to you we can't afford to give to the rich. He claims that the makers are the takers and ignores the fact that he gets a 6 figure salary for a job of nothing more than bitching.

Don't know about the Marxist point of view, but I doubt that....
The examples you give, once more, are OPTIONAL to me...I do not have to take public transportation, or take my child to school (Home schooling don'tcha know) I don't have to go into a library.... even more so now with the internet, I have explained many times that my community and I imagine quite a few others in this USA have much food/clothes/etc. available for those in need.... we do a much greater good with better success that our government never has or ever will with out the outlay of massive amounts of cash. Until ObamaCare came around, nobody was REQUIRED to have health insurance.. I am not saying that they should not have had it,,, they just were not required to have it...
SO, I do not accept the premise that all of the above are Socialism.... WHEN all of those are REQUIRED for you and I to use, then it would probably be a form of Socialism...
The following is my idea of WHAT Socialism is and I do not believe for one moment that we Are a Socialist Society at this time...
an economic theory or system in which the means of production, distribution, and exchange are owned by the community collectively, usually through the state. When it is tax payer supported it is not socialism. The more power you give to your government - the more control your government has over you.
