I've often photographed Rose-breasted Grosbeaks but it was usually around feeders and rarely in the bush. Then I got lucky. As I walked through the marsh, this male was sitting on a cedar rail and was kind enough to stay for a few shots. This is a striking little bird and I was happy he was so tolerant.
I was also pleased with the detail in these images but it will require a download to see it. This proves that a lens (Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM) released in April 1991, without image stabilisation, can still compete with today's glass.
Thanks for looking.

What? It stood on the rail and then turned left and right on your command? Great results.

Perhaps not on my command but he did just that. Almost like studio posing. Thank you Frank.

Very nice a pretty little bird. I had one in our feeder a couple of weeks ago but he took off as soon as I tried to go out and catch a picture.

These are wonderful on many levels. The second image is about as good as any bird photograph should be, with its perfect capture. Belongs in a bird book!

I would think that getting that black eye to stand out against that little black face might be difficult but you have it totally focused and catch light present. He gave you quite a gift of his presence, he's going to make you pay, you know. He's stunning. love the little red bib.

What a beautiful little bird! Excellent image quality.
For me...it's not the year the lens was made but the year I was made that makes IS such a good thing to have.
