1. It wasn't easy for me, but it helped when I bought a book "The missing manual, Switching to the MAC." 2. It's no problem at all. 3. My solution, which worked real well was to buy a 2TB portable hard drive, and move everything onto that. A second portable hard drive for pictures only isn't a bad idea either. I like the mac ok, the worst thing about it is crappy web browsing. The best thing is the solid state hard drive and the retina display.

If you don't like safari for the web there is google chrome and firefox as two alternatives. There is a lot of open source software for the mac. So if your a fan of vlc, libre office and the gimp they are available. There is also mac ports. As Linux is something i've used for years its great to find most of the software i've been running for years is available for osx.

I'm in the same boat, trying to decide. What editing software do you Mac users use for cataloguing, editing and pp?
Do you like aperture? Or still go to photoshop? Or Lightroom? I want to simplify, not complexity (word?).
Thank you! Dsrapa

Recently, it has been shutting down (I'm told that's because of heat), the drivers are dying and I replace them (age?) and sometimes the image I'm working on starts to shake and vibrate.
My questions are: 1 How steep is the learning curve to move from PC to Mac Pro? 2. How difficult is it to transfer files from the present laptop to an Apple? 3. Should I move everything to an old HP desktop that my wife uses on occasion that is years older then the LT and has no problems? I know if I switched over to that it too, could fall apart; however I would save $$ and buy time by so doing???????????
Your ideas on some or all of these questions will be appreciated. :?:

Your heat problem is probably due to a dirty fan and filter.

There is little functional difference between the two platforms. One is an open system and easily configurable, the other has far fewer options. One offers 10 bit display pipeline, the other is locked in at the OS level to just 8 bit. One is an industry leader and by that virtue is more of a value proposition - about 25% cheaper the last time I did a cost/performance analysis, the other is a lifestyle choice that really doesn't do anything better than the other. And finally only one promotes itself as a system with compatibility to the other. :)

With that being said, the software for editing video - Final Cut Pro - is very nice and I prefer to using it over the options offered on the other platform. Photoshop, with the exception on display bit depth noted, is virtually the same on both. For the vast majority, they will not likely see a difference. But for absolutely critical color work, there is no substitute for the system offering the higher bit depth.

I switched 2 years ago and never looked back. I live near an Apple store so i bought One- to - one for $99 and they set-up the computer for me transferring data email etc. It also included a years worth of lessons with an instructor, but there was no problem learning to use the computer.

I agree with the suggestion made earlier. Invest the extra $99 per year in one on one training. It will help propel you through the learning curve. Also, try to get external hard drives that supports USB 3. It is much faster.

Enjoy your new Mac.

. Take advantage of Apple's free classes at the Apple Store, and better yet, for $99.00 a year, you can purchase their One-on-One training which you can use everyday, if you wish. It will be the best investment you have ever made.
:D

I switched to Mac a little more than one year ago. There is no looking back. I learned a great deal thru the $99 one on one sessions. Definitively worth it. Through these sessions I not only learned how to use the laptop; but they helped me set up my photo storage, processing, and backup steps.

I started with Aperture which I liked; but moved to Lightroom which I find much better.

Many good suggestions. I made the change to a Mac book in 2008. Because of my work I have found using Microsoft Office for Mac for PC integration as a valuable tool. The change to Mac is cost effective over the long term.

Make the switch, you won't regret it. The learning curve for me was easy as the Mac is much more intuitive to use. I bought a refurb and it's still going after 7-8 years of hard use.

I mad the switch to a 27" iMac several months ago and it was the best move I could have made. I use Photoshop CC and numerous plug-ins and everything works great. I have to use word, excel and power point for work and people using PCs have no problem seeing my work. The learning curve is not bad. Good luck.

After having worked with PCs since 1984, I switched to the Mac this year. I have only ONE regret- that I wasted thirty years for no good reason at all. There is no going back for me.

Check out the new Dell Precision M 3800. I have had my eye on Mac's for years. Got me the Dell a month ago. It is Dell's answer to Mac Book Pro. Meets or exceeds most Mac specs, including exceeds on display. In speed tests it is a very slight bit slower. It is lighter weight and is made out of nifty carbon fiber. Avoided the time-consuming switch and achieved everything I wanted. It is not cheap but still comparable to a similar Mac Book Pro in price.

If you do let the Apple store transfer all your files, give them specific instructions about where to put your images. Otherwise, they'll put them in iPhoto. They did that to me and suddenly Lightroom couldn't find them. It was a mess straightening everything out

Consider refurbished. You get a good product at a lower price. Also, there's a good book available, which I haven't read yet, but I have skimmed through it - "Switching to the Mac," by David Pogue.
