Switching to a Mac is getting a lot of recommendations. I may have missed it in the thread but I didn't see any discussion about the need to purchase new software programs if you switch from a PC to Mac. Is this correct?

Every image processing software runs on both MAC and PC. You just have to download the MAC VERSION. If you are running Lightroom you already have the software.

I learned the hard way to get the right products for the job and now use a Mac for processing. It has the reputation among the professionals for doing the best job on graphics and processing. Go to Photoshop World and you will see what I mean observing the world's pros at work.
I would suggest taking a look at Adobe Elements as an easier to use processing until you get more comfortable with the steps of processing. It can do a large portion of what PS or LR can do. You may also want to look into either Scott Kelby's PS training or Linda.com training on line. I have also done a lot of on line classes and found them to be the best overall.

Get an iMac; you'll never be sorry. My 21" is great, but my wife's 28" blows me away when it comes to working with photos. You won't go wrong with either, but the 28" is pure WOW!

If I were you, I'd go Mac. One with Retina Display is very crisp and what you would want for photos. I believe another poster gave you the link for refurbished Macs. I bought this refurbished with an extra guarantee and love it! Good luck with whatever you choose!

If there is a windows program you Must run on a Mac, Parallels will allow you to run it just as thought it was a PC. I must admit, the one thing I miss on a PC that you can't get on a Mac is VIRUS. All right, maybe I don't miss viruses, actually I don't miss PCs either. One trip to the Apple store will convince you!

Sorry to dispute you speedy, but I would avoid the big box stores like the plague. Your best bet is to look for a lot end gaming machines then max out the ram on it. The first places I would look would be tigerdirect.Com and newegg.Com. If you can tell me what your budget is I am more than willing to find you a couple of examples. Also do you need a new monitor or not, do your want to install the operating system yourself, are you comfortable assembLing your own pc? Talk to you soon.

The lady did say she needed it that day. Given that a big box store is about the only option for source.

I agree with Josh. I used to beat computers into submission to pay the mortgage. If you are going to be serious about photography, you are going to be doing post-processing. The most critical element is maximum memory (I don't mean hard drives). Gaming machines are generally designed for best graphics and that is usually what we need for Photoshop.

You may need to be sure it has a card reader for SDHC, etc. Some gaming machines don't, but it is easily added for about $10. Also consider specifying a Solid State Drive as the C drive. They are now up to 256GB and even 512GB at a not exorbitant cost.

There are plenty of Apple lovers in photography so this will earn me some hate mail but. . . Stay away from Apple. Feature for feature, Apple is twice the price. It is a "locked down" machine to which it is hard to add things--like additional memory, SSDs, better graphics card, etc. And much software is no longer written for Apple, or is ported later. The last is ironic because the early versions were exclusive to Apple, but in commercial work--where the money is--most companies depend on Windows or Linux. So that's where the software vendors go.

Get a reasonably large monitor. 21 inch would be the minimum, 24 inch would be better. Later, if you get serious with PS or Gimp or PSP you may want a pen and tablet. In fact you may even decide to go to a dual monitor set up.

Epson and Canon own the market for high quality photo printing. I love Canon, but Epson is usually just a step ahead in this area. Not HP. (It is just not their thing.)

Tigerdirect and Newegg are both good. If you have a Fry's nearby, they are also a good source and very reasonable.

well I been through a IBM, a Compac, a hewelet packer. problems with every one . my problems ended when we got a Mac eight years ago . no
more crashes , bugs , viruses , it just goes and goes. we also have a laptop . two iPads a Mac phone . I use the program that is in Mac already
for photos . and I shoot raw . no problems yet . there not over priced they will out last two or three PC. so it's cheaper inthe long run . I have never had to reboot this Mac once in eight years , and with the PC it was a regular thing . no unscrambling your hard drive . nothing just turn it on and it works .if you want simple do yourself a faver and get one you won't
regret it . that is all they will use in the schools incanada because of there reliability

You won't either, unless you have some sort of virus scanner installed and running.

Question for the original poster .... Did any of this help you decide what computer to buy?

It has been more than 24 hours since the OP posted the question. We've all had a chance to vent on our favourite editing platforms and, as was inevitable, it has turned into a mac/pc debate. Just like the tease questions on Nikon vs Canon. The OP hasn't been part of the conversation at all. Does anyone else smell a troll?
