Hi pappy,
I have the Bower 500mm F8...I just mounted it on one of my cameras...and the sun..well...without a very nice sunny day its very tough to do anything with it...go figure. But for what I paid for it...just fun to play with really.
I have a Bower fish eye and it seems to work fine and is a fun toy

There are a series of ultra cheap, low quality generic lenses on the market. Mostly, they are long focal length (500mm, 650mm, etc) lenses, & the same lens could be marketed as a Bower, Rockinon, Samyang, Vivitar, etc. Like Bret wrote, okay for a bit of cheap fun, nothing else. One exception is their generic 8mm fisheye. It is cheap & basic, but is built like a tank & takes great photos.
I utilize the Rockicon 24 mm manual lens for night sky photography and it is great Their prime lenses are mot expensive and work very well

if you want something with which to play, by all means get one.
The 85mm f1.4 Bower, Rokinon, Samyang, Vivitar (same thing) is sensational. I haven't tried any of the other focal lengths they're making (am contemplating trying the 8mm with my TC-16a on my F4 as a full-frame fisheye in an underwater housing....). But their optical designers know what they're doing. Are these budget lenses: Of course, but some are very, very good.

hi, interesting idea regarding the 8mm lens. my only concern is if the optics are corrected for underwater use. if i recall correctly, and i may be wrong here, the 35mm lens on the nikonos was the only one that could be used both in and out of water. anyway, good luck with your idea - hope it succeeds magnificantly!
