Saralynn, I have the G-11 and G-16 and like both of them. Small and light, they're very versatile. Have fun in Costa Rica!

Thanks! It is actually a return visit. My older daughter's senior trip eight years ago was also to Costa Rica. I was hoping this one would be to someplace I haven't been, but as returns go I can't complain.

Next month I am going to Costa Rica with my daughter to celebrate her high school graduation. It's an adventure-type tour and my Canon T3i will be too unwieldy.

I am looking for something that is small enough to take along hiking, horseback riding and ziplining but gives me more creative control that my old Olympus Stylus point-and-shoot.

Unfortunately budget is an issue. I'm kicking myself for not seeing a $299 Canon PowerShot G15 deal last month until after it expired.

Right now I am considering a used PowerShot G12 in the $240 range and a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LF1 for $249. I welcome comments and other suggestions in the sub-$300 realm.

Thanks,
Sara Lynn

I bought a 2nd hand CANON G7 (£85.00). The advert said as new, and despite being 7 years old it looks and feels like it. I would reccomend looking at a few CANON G seires models. But get one with the wider angle 5x zoom lens. The only complaint I have with the G6 is the not to wide zoom at around 35mm. Later models went back to around a 28mm I believe.

But the SX50 is not much easier to deal with than your current T3i. My back-up camera for my Canon DSLR is a Sony Cybershot which seems to have none of the shutter lag-time that so many of the pocket cameras have. And for use on an adventure trip or a trip which is fundamentally not all about photography, it has the advantage of being small enough to fit into a pocket - also small enough to fit into a zip-lock bag into my pocket when I am kayaking, rafting, etc. And - it does a fantastic job. I carry a small 6-inch flexible tripod that allows not only "selfies" but also easy time exposures by setting the time-delay. But then the SX50 is a great all-in-one package that saves the need for multiple lenses. But also consider other options.

Thanks again for all of the comments and suggestions. I just pulled the trigger on a G15. Currently $319 at B&H in case anyone is interested.

You will be very happy with the G15, good choice.

You can't go wrong with either one. Be sure to get it soon enough so you can practice using it and adjusting it. They both have many good features and adjustments. Get an extra battery and a couple of SD cards.

Since Costa Rica is a more humid place than usual...you may want to consider a waterproof camera. I just purchased the Fujifilm XP60. The Fujifilm FinePix XP60 is a small and slim digital compact camera. As well as a line-up of popular features such as a 16 megapixel CMOS sensor, Full HD video, SDXC card compatibility and anti-reflective screen, the XP60 is waterproof, shock-proof, dust-proof and freeze-proof. This makes it one tough cookie. Will it survive our rigorous test and come out smelling of roses? The Fujifilm FinePix XP60 costs around $199 and is available in blue, red, black, yellow and green.

I usually go for the larger zoom compacts, but since I am going to Hawaii next week I wanted something for snorkeling and sitting on the beach. It doesn't have a large zoom, but the photos coming out of it are great. I took it on a tour of the Martin guitar factory and shot at 3200iso and the photos came out great since it has the CMOS sensor.

The others you mention are great cameras and I may look at one of those as a back up to my Canon 70D.

Good choice. I had the bigger EOS T1 too when I picked out tye G15. Takes excellent shots! Very light without sacrificing quality.

If having an EVF isn't an issue for you, Wally's has a Fuji Finepix 4420 (could be 4430, I was just passing by when I saw it) for $99.

Wow. B&H has already shipped. Scheduled to arrive Tuesday!

I have the G16, and love it. It is a bit larger than most compact cameras, but you should still be able to carry it much easier than a DSLR or bridge camera.

I bought a belt pouch for my G16, and take it with me everywhere I go.

B & H has the powershot G15 on sale for $319.00. I ordered one this morning. Can't wait to get it. My reason is the same as yours, I need something a bit smaller for travel.Anne
