Hey Guys, I am running Microsoft windows xp and accidently deleted all icons from my desktop. Does anyone know how to restore the icons to my desktop?

Did you delete your recycle bin too?

Hit the start button and then click on all programs. Then right click on the program you want a shortcut for and it will give you an option to create one. Hope this helps.

That is scary! Just for my fumble-fingered education, HOW did you delete all the icons? Did you click something and they disappeared or were you deeper into the system than I dare to go? I ask because I was not aware that you could--either accidently or on purpose-- mass-delete everything on the desktop.

I did something to my laptop while back where I hit something and it rearranged them all. I like to keep them a certain way so I started trying to put them back and they kept copying themselves instead of moving. (Come to find out I think I had them locked or something. So it is easier than you might think to make those shortcuts do funky things.) Like everyone else said they should be in the recycle bin and you can restore them or just go back into all programs from the start menu and make new ones.

To remove unused desktop icons
1. Open Display in Control Panel.
2. On the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop.
3. Under Desktop cleanup, click Clean Desktop Now.
4. Follow the directions in the Desktop Cleanup Wizard.
I cannot recall how you get them back, but it is likely when you open the Customize Desktop, you can undo what you did do when you did do what you done did.
I have no icons on my desktop.

Sometimes your profile will disappear and it looks like your desktop is gone. Look on your C: drive for the "Users" folder. If you see two folders that have your login name with one slightly different the system has created a new profile for you. If that is the case you can copy the desktop folder from the old profile to your new one. There are several other things that might have gone wrong. Most things are fixable.

Open the recycle bin. Find the icons and click on restore. This will put them back on the desktop.

if that does not work go to system tools and run system restore. that brings your entire system back to and eariler date when the icons were there.

I have windows 7 but with my os if i right click hover on view i can uncheck show desktop icons and do it again and they come back my desktop has xp and rightclick arrange desktop icons by>show desktop icons

MTShooter, I've read your replies to others with problems and have to say that I think you are the most spot on of all the remedies that are offered up. This guy will be so confused by the time he replies, if he does and may never see his desktop again...lol

Try this, right click on your desktop and go to view, another box should now show, make sure your box that says "show desktop icons" is checked.
