HELP! My kid needs a camera for school...
Only buy what you don't mind being stolen or lost.

If he buys her the Nikon, she won't be "borrowing" his lenses. When a daughter "borrows" something from her daddy, its gone!
Another moot point. From the OP, "Thanks, Steph aka Maddie's Mom! "

Hello, my daughter is a freshman in HS and she is going to a HS that specializes in what they want to be when they grow up. She wants to be the next Dr. Dre but with pics and video. She is a freshman and taking a class where she is excelling amazingly to be asked to do what the Seniors are doing. With this being said, she is needing her own camera that does video. Can any of you tell me what is a good camera with video to get for her? I have a budget of $1,000.00. If it is a Cannon that would be great because i have all the lenses and would only need to buy the body and can save some money.
Thanks,
Steph aka Maddie's Mom!

I am also a Canon shooter with a number of "L" lenses. Just bought a used T2i for $200.00 that is being used exclusively for video. Excellent results with an inexpensive wireless mike.
You can spend a lot more . . . but to what advantage?
They all do video these days, but the best Canon for the least money is the 70D. Do you have any of the new STM lenses that are designed for autofocusing on the newer Canon cameras while shooting video?

Does she have to Software to edit her movies...maybe that is available a the school.
I would buy a Canon SL-1 refurb body (available right now at Canon USA for $383).....then use the other $600 to buy a lens or two....the Canon 18-200 is a good all-around lens that will fill a lot of needs.
Nikon D90 with 17-55 kit lens or 245-120 kit lens; still being manufactured by nikon a really good camera to learn from and take videos.
I would recommend for a first camera Canon 50X. I takes awesome pictures. And the zoom is unreal. 50X is equal to a 1200mm lens. And it also has a 200X digital zoom which equates to 4800mm lens. I will guarantee that you WILL be jealous of the pictures that will come out of this little camera. All for $400.00. It also has manuel settings. Do not buy a camera without checking out this great little bridge camera. PLEASE!!!!!

SS, but you must be kidding to think that all families of high school level kids can afford such a camera. Just doesn't seem possible.
This all may be a moot issue as it appears the OP has left the building.

Gordon, I was simply stating a fact, it was not related to what I do.
And different HS's programs, I'm sure, differ.
But many of these programs are academic in nature. I'm sure everybody here is familiar with a program that lets you shoot anything you want, possibly even cell phones!
It would behoove Mom to go talk to all of the instructors involved(for the next four years), of what exactly what IS required for the next four years worth of classes, to be sure, before she plunks down her G.
If you are aware that your local programs allow a P&S, please let us know. Used DSLR's start at $100, that could be quite affordable for most.
Whether Mom is IN the building or not, good info is good info, and can be valuable to others, all over the internet, not just here on the Hog! ;-)

slow down, get her a p&s with video for now, at lest than $125.00. if she sticks with it, next august get the good one.
I would have to agree. She may misplace it or get it stole, God forbid. Later when you get her a 70D she can have the other as a back-up.

I agree that the Canon SX50 is a great camera, and it is recommended frequently on UHH. I'm not sure if a 50x superzoom is particularly important for a student in a class. Some teachers may see it as a disadvantage, and may even require that the students use a prime lens like a nifty-fifty (50mm f/1.8).

Some kids are fickle, some are incredibly dedicated to their goals and interests.
If Maddie changes her mind, and stops doing photography except with her iPhone, Steph gets to use the 70D herself. :-)
Would that constitute back door GAS???

I have a 70D with a kit STM leans ........... great for videos plus there really isn't much she could do in the still department with a camera like that.
The non STM lens will work but it is loud and much slower for video.
The 70D just fells like a 'big boy' camera
Or should I say 'big girl' camera

You just had to go there, didn't you?
So many HS Photography 101 Courses want a Film Camera for B&W Darkroom work. I purchased a used Retina IIIC just to lend in this type situation.
