I want to upgrade from a super-zoom and not sure of the benefits of a DSLR vs Mirorless

Mr ground rules are: a) Must be small, I walk with a cane and one handed shooting is sometimes the only option b) would like zoom from 20 something to at least 200 or more c) must have viewfinder (optical or EVF) d) no interest in wi-fi, video or in-camera processing. Would like to keep price under $1.000

I just want bright, sharp photos, especially in low light.

I just purchased the Oly EM10 and absolutely blown away with the results. Well under $1000.00. YOU MUST LOOK AT THIS.
Your experience and suggestions please

People are suggesting cameras with interchangeable lenses. I wonder if this is truly what he wants. It appears to me that he would rather keep it simple with quality.

He asked for comments about dSLR vs Mirrorless and they have interchangeable lenses so what are we supposed to talk about if not that?

I personally don't understand why he's not considering one of the latest crop of bridge super zooms like the lightweight Panasonic Lumix FZ-200 which has constant f/2.8 across the whole zoom range and gives very clear crisp output with its Leica glass. He must be soured by an older sickly super zoom with low resolution and crappy glass.

I did this migration 1 year ago from a Panasonic SuperZoom to a Sony NEX6 with a 55-210 and 16-50 kit. The larger sensor is the main difference and that is very significant. Otherwise with the smaller lens, the Sony is actually smaller than the Panasonic.
Changing lens is the main hassle going away from a superzoom.

OP wants a camera with a viewfinder.

The OP wants either an OVF or EVF, the Sony NEX6 has an EVF.

Thank you all.

You have suggested 17 different model numbers which I will now further research.

More back story. I used a Panasonic FZ 18 for years and loved it. Last year bought the FZ 60 for more zoom and shorter shutter lag. Very disappointing picture quality. Meanwhile I have been doing some work with DSLR and Mirrorless folks and been blown away with the image quality and want to get in on the good deal.

Undersized body with dslr regular lenses. Not balanced in my opinion. Hard to believe it, but the controls felt more cramped than on my em1.

Virtually every bridge super zoom has a viewfinder. Most mirrorless models don't although Olympus has an optional viewfinder for their PEN series and the bigger brothers have a viewfinder. Same with Panasonic Lumix G series models.

Would be nice with the 40mm pancake - otherwise ?? ......the Sony A3000 is a tick smaller/lighter with smaller lenses and built in EVF.

The NEX6 has a EVF. Having played with few opticals I didn't see the point in restricting camera selection on that basis.

I'm probably too late to be useful here, but I think the fella that said Sony HX300 has it right. Here's a MAJOR reason, by your criteria: it has, I'm sure, the best Optical Stabilizer on the market, which will prove invaluable for your low light photos. I think they claim 4 stops improvement at slow shutter speeds.

I am down to Sony A 6000 with 18-200 lens (35mm 27-300) or
Lumix G 6 with 14-140 (28-280)

Price is comparable (Sony a bit more) Reviews give Sony slight edge on image quality, more focus points and faster burst. Lumix, with lens is 1/2 pound lighter. brighter evf, lens is better rated

You've all been very helpful up till now, last word before I pull out my credit card?

Between those two...the a6000 would get my vote. Between the a6000 and an em10...I'd choose the em10 due to a better lens selection. I'm just not a fan of the g6, or really any body that does not do stabilization.

Between those two the G6 would get my vote because I use the micro 4/3 format with an Olympus PEN and a Panasonic Lumix super wide angle lens. My real estate work IQ matches or beats the IQ of most dSLR output I've seen in luxury real estate magazines where they're using much more expensive equipment. I may even get a G6 next time I want to upgrade because of it's extremely cool wi-fi ability to be viewed and controlled from an iOS or Android device.
