I use a Nikon MC-30 Remote Trigger Release on my D800E for over 50% of the shots I take. As I have fat clunky fingers, it is a pain to take on and off. I know that the MC-30A addresses this issue with a much easier locking wheel, but I don't feel like forking over another $65 when this one works fine once I get it attached.
My question is: am I doing any damage by leaving the remote attached all the time? It is locked tight onto the camera so I have never noticed any play or slippage at the connection site.
Just be careful when handling the camera that the cord doesn't catch on something. Leaving it attached won't damage the camera or release.
For what it is worth: I use a Nikon ML-2 remote trigger release. I shot many panoramas on a tripod. I use mirror lockup and wait 5 seconds for the camera to settle down and shoot. My point is I never screw the remote all the way into the 10 pin connector. On my camera (D2x) the fit is snug enough to hold it in. I am 70 and my fingers are not as nimble as they used to be.
Have you considered the wireless remote?

I had trouble getting mine tight and then trying to get it to release. I purchased a pair of needle nose pillars & keep them in the camera bag. Works like a charm.

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and get a small rubber grommet to slip over the knurled piece that screws onto the camera body. I've done this to mine and it works like a charm when connecting the remote release.
